Paris, May ~According to the Madrid min of the Eclair, the Spanish minister of marine has stated that the plans for reorganizing the navy will include the creation of a defensive squadron of fast cruisers, submarine and torpedo boats. The minister admitted that these pluns were discussed during the re- cent meeting between King Edward and King Alfonso at Cartagena, and added : "That meeting will have happy results for our naval future." Plans and estimates for the pew squadron and the improvemeots at Ferrol were submitted by Messrs, Beardmore and Roper, the British naval engineers, during their inter view with the minister, yesterday, and will be considered by the government. It is estimated that the total cost of the naval reorganimtion scheme will be 860,000,000. The scheme is to be submitted to the cortes at the next session. Toronto Street Market. Corrigan and P. Corrigan, Bagot street, took place, after a short illness, on Tuesday last, at St. Paul, Minn. SISTERS EVICTED. Soldiers Battered in Doors at Nantes. Nantes, France, May 6.--At day- light, on Saturday, fifty mounted gendarmes surrounded the convent of the Ursulines here, and when the sis- ters refused to open the doors they were battered in. Tho sisters were found assembled at prayers in the chapel, but after the superior had read a protest against the action tak- en by the authorities, the officiating priest removed the holy sacrament and the sistors withdrew. In the meantime, an excited crowd gathered outside the convent, shouting maledio- tions on the soldiers. A number of persons were arrested, including a lieu- tenant of the 25th Dragoons, ----y-- Convent Silvercloth,: the handy polisher, 25¢., at Best's. DIED AT THE CAPITAL. Sheriff Sweetland, a Kingstonian, Passes Away. Sheriff Sweetland passed away at Ottawa on Sunday, at the age of sev- enty-five years. He was a Kingston- ian, a son of the late Samuel Sweet- lend, and an uncle of James R., John S,, and Lawrence L. Henderson, of Kingston. He graduated in medicine at Queen's University, and practiced in Ottawa and Packenham, until his appointment as sherifi of Ottawa, which took place some twenty years ago. He was twice married, being survived by two children by his first wife, and two by his second wife. In- terment will take place at Ottawa. TO BECOME DUKE ? Report Strathcona Will Receive Honor on May 24th. Montreal, May 6.--For some time rumors have been rife that Lord Strathcona would retire us Canadian' high commissioner in London. The latest report is that on May 24th, announcement will be made that his majesty has been pleased to confer a dukedom upon his lordship in recog- nition of his distinguished services to the empire, and that Lord Strath- cona will shortly afterwards relin quish the high commissionership, and be succeeded by Sir Frederick: Borden. The Dominion government will, it is understood increase the allowance of the commissioner from $10,000 to $25,000 a year. RELICS OF CRIME. Trophies Added to- Scotland Yard Collection.
