Ottawa, May 8.--This week's Can- ada Gazette will contain a proclama- tian stating that the act to provide for inspection of canned food pro- duets, meats and fish, passed at the last session of parliament, will éome into force on August lst next. Regu. lations in respect to duties of inspee- tors, methods of inspection, ete., are now being drafted. The government will appeint about forty-five inspec tors, whe wifl be under Dr. Ruther ford as inspector-gpneral. The total cost of enforcing the act is estimated at $75,000 per year. The salaries of | the inspectors will be $1,200 per year. -------------- STARVED ON TREK. {Eleven Thousand Perished on the March. Cape Town, May 8.--Iu is stated that the Hereros, finding it useless further to resist the Germans in German South West Africa, trekked northeastward with the intention of forming a new settlement in'the neighborhood of Lake Nagami, eleven thousand of o tribe died of starvation en route.
