Sn The Town is in the Hands of a Boom--Sudden Death of Mrs. S. M. Conger--New Canning Factory at Hillier. Picton, May 14.--This is a signal year in the "upbuilding of Picton. A building boom is on and never in the town's history has there been a busier spring season. All labor is in keen demund and the very highest wages are being paid. The buliding ery: tions now in progress represent com- siderably over the $100,000 mark and plans are being gored for several other buildings. A foremost feature in the active upbuilding is the new cement-brick Baptist church on King street. This edilice will probably cost £6,000, aml represents a noble achieve. ment of a particularly small congre- ration. B Activity in the business life of Pie- ton is also responsible for many building improvements. A brick ex- tension of 115 fect deep is being add- ed to Allison's drug store. U. F. Vandusen will very shortly commence work on two new shops on Main street, on the site of the old Jamison block, destroyed by fire. The build- ings will cost at least $10,000. N. Baillie, baker, is erecting on Union street a large brick and stone bake shop. Spencer Bros. will build. a large new hot house for their rapidly growing florist business. It will be 200 feet in length and be capstructed of steel and coment. Many of the town's prominent citizens are also building amd some very handsome homes are going up. E. M. Young, er, is now putting the finishing ws to his handsome $10,000 home. In several instances five to eight thousand dollars is being ex- pended in new houses. Hepburn Pros. will build a o w brick house on Bridge street; H. W. Bedell, two modern cement ol i on Cen- bar tou tre street; Frederick Hepburn, proprie- tor of Royal hotel, a new home on Main street west. Dr. leaslip is re modelling his home on Main strect and building a brick addition to make a double dwelling. I'v. Herrington, V.8,, is completely renovating his Main street home, and 1. 0. Crandall will build a new house on Maple avenue. Work has commenced on the new canning factory at Hillier being erect- ed by the Bloomfield Packing com pany. The factory will be built of cement bricks at a cost of about $25, 000. The contract for the cement work has been let to H. W. Bedell, Bloomfield. and the carpentry to Frank Wright, Picton. Peculiar interest was attached to the serv Sunday in St. Mary Muogdalene's church. . The lessons wore read and the evening sermon preach ed by Gerald Despard, a student of Wyéliffe College, Tempnto, a son 'of Mrs. W._ IP. Despard, Paul street. Young Mr. Despard gave a very able vs on sermon on "The Reality Of Jesus Christ." At three o'clock, Monday afternoon, Mrs. Conger, wife of S. M. Conger, editor of the Picton Gazette, passed away very suddenly at the home on King strcet. Mrs. Conger had been in failing health for some time, but the end was a great shock to a very large circle of friends. She was a descen- dant of a family of United Empire Loyalists. Surviving, beside her hus- band, are two sons, Donald, in Chi: cago: E. Marshall, Picton, and one daughter, Mrs. lison, Picton. She is commanded by Captain Samuel Massey, of Ogdensburg, one of the younger generation of sailors. The rumor that the steamer Toron- to, at present at the city whose name she bears, would be brought to Kng- ston for refitting before starting on the season's run, apparently is with- out foundation. Montreal, May 14.--The longshore- men's strike for higher wages has so far progressed quietly. Comparative ly little work is being done on board the steamships in port, the companies not having had time as vet to make arrangements to secure help outside. The crews of the steamers are doimg what they ean, but it is not much. Police reserves were on hand, early to-day, in case of the development of any trouble, but their services were not needed. It is just reported that teamsters have gone on strike, and this will tard to still further com- plicate the difficulties of the steam- ship companies in getting ships load- ed and unloaded.
