Farmer Accused of Hiding Feeding Them. Cornwall, Ont; May 23. George Barclay, Iroquois, in jail at Canton, N.Y., for smuggling, recently broke his parole, when allowed out about town on account of his health, and skipped for home, which he reached in safety. William Brisben, in for forg- ery, also escaped. Milo Lawrence, a farmer who resides at 'Waddington, N.Y., nearly opposite uois, has been arrested and committed for trial on a charge of hiding and feeding the escaped prisoners. James Collier, of Picton, intends to build a boat for Napanee-Adolphus- town-Picton route. He'is the own- er of the steamer Rejndeer. The steamer Saleberry, which arriv- ed here yesterday, en route to Belle ville, has been purchased by the Cement company of the latter place week was the for a fe boat to carry their em- ployees. She is 100 feet long. The steamer Varuna, of Belleville, has had to re-install her triple engine, owing 10 a new compound one order ed not being completed in time. The former was considered too strong for a boat of the Varuna's size. She can speed sixteen miles an hour. The steamer General B. Franklin, of Alexandria Bay, has been purchased by Peter Cavanagh of Perth. She has been--on the St. Lawrence river sinew 1872. The death occurred at Montreal, on Wodnesday, of Miss Margaret Byrne, sister at the Mother Home." Decensad had been ill -for some time. She was formerly mother superior at the Notre Dame convent, in this city, and left here two years ago, for Montreal. James Byrne, of Johnson street, is a brother of decemsed, and he, accom- panied by Archbishop Gauthier and Mother Wilired, of the convent here, have left for Montreal, where the funeral will take place. The Cup On Exhibition. The magnificent siiver cup donated by the Victoria Day celebration com- mittee to the winner of the motor boat races to-morrow, is on exhibi- tion in the window of C. W, Lane's jowellery store, Wellington street. Mr. Lane supplied the cup, and his choice of design is to be commended. The engraving has been very tastefully executed. On one side of the cup ap- pear the words: 'Victoria Day, Kingston, 1907, Championship cup.' Many citizens admired the beautiful trophy, which should be highly priz- ed by the fortunate winner, whoever he may be. The Decline In Bank Stocks. Montreal, May 23.--The stocks of al most all the leading chartered banks of Canada have recently been showing steady declinos. 'Themas Miller a Young Man; Arrested By Constable Naylon --Remanded a Day. Constable John Naylon, last night; arrested Thomas Miller, a young man who has been before the court on two other occasions, 'on a charge of steal ing clothes from the line in the yard at the home of Chapman Chm le, Earl street. He appeared in the po- lice court, this morning, and was re- manded a day. Constable Naylon says that he caught Miller in the yard, with a small bundle of clothes in his arm. Niller does not deny this, but states that he has been employed for several days, in hauling ashes, and that last night, he was around several yards, on the lookout for a job. He says that while he was in Chapelle's yard, he ran aginst the clothes line, knook- ing some of the clothes to the ground and that he was just about to re place them, but Constable Naylon ap- peared an the scene. Constable Naylon noticed the pris oner on West street about 9:15 we whe and it was shortly after this that he caught him in the yard: The officer said that when he was about to place Miller under arrest, the young man cried bitterly, and begged not to be taken to the police station, saying that the magistrate would send him down for five years. ! While the officer was making some conuiries at the house, Miller jumped the back femce, and made his escape. Later, Constable Naylon arrested him at his home. John Melntyre, K.C,, appeared. on behalf of the prisoner. James Healey, a young Englishman, who has been out in this country a year, was registered as a drunk. He was taxed £2 and costs, and paid.
