Workman's Denial--He Enters Accusation of Libel. Montreal, May 29.--The Montreal conference of the Mythodist church, at Gananoque, | this week, will be called upon to give a decision upon a charge of libel brought by Rev. Prof, George LU. Workman, Ph.p., against Rev, Dr, Shaw, principal of the Wesleyan The,- logical College, in this city, Rev. Dr. Workman, who is the pro- fessor of Old Testament exegesis and literature in the Wesleyan College, stands for critical views of scripture, and for historical methods of inter- preting seripture, That was perfectly well known before he came to Mont- real, and it is understood that he re- garded his appommtment as being made for the purpose of representing such views, and of interpreting the scrip- tures in accordance with what he Maintains are the approved principles of exegesis. Recently, however, at a meeting of the governors of the col- lege, the question was raised as to whether! Dr. Workman really was teaching the doctrines of the Metho- dist church to the young men study- ing at the college for the ministry, Jr, Shaw, the principal of the col- lege, replied at considerable length to the question, reading a document in which he alleged that Dr. Workman denied the doctrine of inherited de- Pravity, the doctrine of the Trinity, and the doctrine of the atonement, as volving any expiatory element in the death of Christ. Further, hs as- serted that Dr. Workman denied the virgin birth of Christ, and rejected the genuineness and historicity of the fourth gospel and some other points of doctrine, Having heard and discussed Prinei- pal Shaw's statement, the governors, by a vote of nine out of thirteen, de- cided {o mnquire into the doctrinal at- titude of Dr Workman, and a commit- tee of six, of which Principal Shaw as a member, was organized to find out, in a friendly way if possible, ex- actly what Dr, Workman's views are. Immediately after this, Principal Shaw received complaint from Dr. Workman charging him with libel. This charge was brought before a committee appointed for that purpose and after ssion lasting for two and a half 4, » during which Dr. Workman gave lengthy ev idence, the court rendered the following "judg- ment: "The gaid defendant (Principal Shaw) had reason (6 believe the Statements made by him were true at the time he made them and we believe that in his position as Principal of the college it was his duty to call the attention. of the governors to the fact. Wo therefore find that the said charges are not sustained, and that the defendant i# not guilty." Dr. Workman has since announced that he will appeal from this decision before the Montreal conference, on this ground, among others, that at no ume, and to po person, and in ne period of his life, did he ever deny one of those New Testament doe- trines, hut, on the contrary, has al ways believed and taught them, as scripturally as he was capahle. Meanwhile, Principal Shaw has is- sued a statement to the governors and members of the senate of the Wes- levan College, and to a few others, detailing the cir umstances of the case, and showing hie attitude on the matter. While ddmitting the serious- mss of the circumstances, he says that they nead not cause any bitter ness of 'feeling, 'or any "'odium theo- logicum," if ali personal elements he eliminated, but he fools that those to whom hp has issued th, statement have a right to be properly acquaint- ed with the circumstances, because they so close ly affect the college, The charge of libel, the principal iclt very keenly at first, com- ing as it did from a colleague, but he stoutly maintains the right of the gov- ernors to inquire into the doctrines of a professor, a minster in good stand- ing in the church, with a view to de- termining whether or not he is now in harmony with the authorized doctrines of the Methodist church. "If my raul is shown hy competent legal wu. wrong," he says, "I t once stop the inquiry whisy ordered, and apologize most sin- to the professor concerned- not any wilful wrong, but for my un- te Elandoe it an says, h th » time, Printipal Shaw t: that Dr. Workman had « right of libel against harge a charg r things Dr. Shaw ay again I believe in Dr..
