Montreal, May 31.--A sensational fire took place, at 2:30 a.m., during the progress of a dance in, a hall in the east end, when a number of peo- ple were compelled to jump from a third storey window, and a dozen of them were more or. less injured, some of them probably fatally. The hall. is in the top floor of a building, a few doors east of the City hall, on Notre Dame street, and fire started in the basement, the ground floor being occupied as a dry-goods store by G. Marsolaise. The. crowd of dancers upstairs became pamic-strivken by the rush of smoke and flames, and started jumping from the windows be- fore the firemen arrived. One man' had both legs broken and another his spine injured. The firemen rescued many by means of ladders. The fire did not amount to much and was quickly extinguished, Many injured were taken to their homes for treatment om acconmt of which it is difficult to ascertain the exact number hurt.
