Ottawa, June 8.--Speculation is rife as to the men who will be selected as Canadian representatives on the mili- tary council of the ompire for which provifion was made at the imperial conference of last month. The object of this council is to co-operate in se curing uniformity of traning, equip- ment, arms, ete, among all the branches of the empire. Major-Gen. P. H. N. Lake, chief of staff; and Liewt..Col. G. W, Gwatkin, chief of staff, will be among the Canadian re- presentatives. Among the other names mentioned are those of Col. F. L. Lessard, adjutant-general; lieut.-Col. Thornton Taylor, commandant of the Royal Military College; Major Duncan Maclnnes, of the Royal Engineers, and Major, D. 1. V, Eaton,' assistant direc- tor of operations and stafi duties. The four last-named are Canadians, Lieut. Col. Taylor and Major Maclunes be- ing at present temporarily attached to the Canadian forces. All but Col. Lessard are graduates of the Royal Military College. Sl The railway commission, yesterday, disposed of the G.T.R. application to fill in a large part of the long via duet at Port Hope, which was oppos- ed by the town on the ground that the railway's plan would shut off to a large extent the present approaches to -the waterfront. The board's deci sion is favorable to the town. The railway will not be allowed to fill in the viaduct between the east side of Mill street and the west side of the elevator tracks.
