The members of the local Orange lodges and Prentice Boys, now in session in the city, attended divine service in St, Paul's church, at 7.30 o'clo Members formed in line at the Orange hall and march: ed to the church, eighty strong, by Princess and Montreal streets. The church was well filled and the choir rendered able assistance in the service. Special leaflets were issued containing the order of the service. The vicar, Rev. W. F. Fitagerald, NA, TCD, preached a very thoughtful sermon, taking as his text, Psalm evii, 6 and 7: "Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses, and be led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation." f The vicar entended a warm welcome to the members and said he was in sympathy with all moral objects of the order, He urged them to be readers of good history and' details of the times, Ii they wished to be associated with the country's moral history they should at all times stand for the truth, and "no surrender to temptation to intom- perance in their lives' should be their motto. Rev. Charles E. Manning was pre- sented, to-day, with a resolution un- animously passed by the joint trustee and quarterly board of Sydenham Street Methodist church, at its last meeting, June 10th. Thé resolution spoke of the sincere regret felt by the board in being called upon to accept his resignation as pastor after a term of only {wo vears, having been called to the position of field secretary of home missions of the Methodist church. During his ministry the churel had grown in membership, and the finances of the church had been placed on a much sounder basis. than ever before. The floating debt of the church had been paid out of the or dinary contributions. The missionary and other church funds had grown considerably, and all departments of church work are in a progressive con dition. The pastoral work had been very carefully and svstematically done, especially among the poor and the feeble. His pulpit utterances had been of a high order, strong and convine- ing, and his work for moral reform strengthening and uplifting. While the church will lose much by his removal, the boards felt that the Methodist church at large will be the richer. Pick Roses. Rosce, like many . other flowers; should he freely picked. If, however, it is desired to leave the flower on ite bush rather than to bring it into the house, the bush should be watched so that when the leaves begin to fall from the rose that has been in bloom for some time it should be plucked at once. If you permit it to die on the twig, the plant will go to seed and many of the buds (particul- arly those near by) will fail to bloom. Painting The Town Green. * Brokaw Cor. Duluth Herald. The custom of letting a close of pas- ture land in the parish of Tatworth, Dorset,by "candle auction" has just been celebrated, the last bidder before the, Hight went out being adjudged the owner for the ensuing year. This is one of those curious old usages in which our forefathers took apparently 'an' especial delight, and a variation of which was the pin-and- candle auction. A pin 'was thrust into a candle about an inch from the top, and bidding went on until the candle 'was down to the pin, when the latter, of gowrse, dropped into the candle stick, and the last bidder was declared to be the purchaser, In 1808, at Aldermaston, near Read ing, a large estate changed hands ai ter this peculiar fashion, and last year a ship was sold in Liverpool by the same means. Racing auctions, again, used to be very popular, and survives to the présert day whe prov ed a) few weeks back, when, at Bourne, in Lincolnshire, a piece of land was disposed of m this manner At each bid a boy was started to run to a certain public-liouse, and the sucocssful biddir was he'whose bid had not been challenged when' the last boy returned.
