VANCOUVER CENSUS SHOWS POPULATION TO BE 70,000, ------ Grant Pyke's Statement About Chinese Owning One-Quarter of the City is Wrong--Only 4, 500 Chinese There. Special Whig Correspondence. Vancouver, B.C., June 12.~~Not very long ogo, ; Grant Pyke, of Wolfe ls- land, made a tour of the west, making a short stop at Vancouver, and 1 have no doubt that Mr. Pyke's racy letters, which appeared in your your readers. In writing up Vancou- ver, Nr. Pyke made the statement that oneguarter of the city was own: ed by Chinnmen. For the information of Nr. Pyke, and those who letters, and who art not familiar with the facts, 1 will say that the census taker has just completed his arduous has a population of seventy sand, and that of this number thousand five hundred are Chinese, two thousand other colors, and sixty-three thousand are white. ! Now, if forty-five hundred Chinese own one-gparier, and sixty'three thou sand whites only three-quarters of our wealth, then 1 must say that the Chi- bese deserve credit for their frugality. ut the fact is, this statement of Mr. Pyke's is far from being correct. There arc a few wealthy Chinese merchants in the city, but their number is _com- paratively smmll. The great majority of these: people are employed either as domestics, or in the mills and can- ning factories, and if these people own the wealth of Vancouver, then. what must the impression of easterncrs bo concerning us ? Mr, Pyke is wrong 1 He muy have been sincere in his writ ing, and been laboring under a misap prehension, or he may have been ace tunted by jealousy or selfishness, but I am inclined to think that, though he wrote with the dir of one who had all the information at his finger's ond, yet it wis for want of informa- tion concerning the soveral subjects of which he wrote that Jeft him open to ridicule all along his line of travel, In order to do duty to the task, if such you should wish to eall it, of writing up a city like Vancouver, one must remain for sotbe time in the oity, and must become to Some extent at least aoguainted with facts, figures, and, no, we will leave out the word "fancies." 'But we want the facts and figures. Of course, you eam got a great deal of information 'in Vaneou- ver in a very short time. Almost: any barber in the ¢ity can tell the stran ger more about the city while he is ghaving him than some of the older residents know, and they can do the sme thing in any of the bar-rooms, and hotel offices, but is such informa- tion reliable ¥ Is it the kind of infor- mation that one would consider worth while writing home about? fhen we mdertake to write to the press about such a city as Vancouver, or about those great prairies that are produc ing wheat to feed so many millions of people, and are attracting the atten tion of people from almost all parts of the world, we should know some- thing ok the facts as they exist, awd should guide our pen areordingly. It would be impossible for anyone to tell the whole truth about this western country, but we can aim at telling the truth, and nothing but the truth, except, of course, at election times, when we are carried away upon the wings of enthusiasm.
