We have seen grain © consi dernbly worse than it is now 'and yet have a good erop after. In 1884, pre- vious to" the 4th of July in that year, the grain crop was in a deplorable condition for want of rain. Un the ith of July the rain came down in torrents and soaked the earth thor- oughly as it did on Sunday. The grain crop was very plump and good, although the straw was short. Even uncut hay improved considerably. It certainly is not too late yet should another good rain come soon. A gregh deal of corn has beem planted as a provision against a scarcity of fod der. Some one has wittily remarked that corn laughs at dry weather. Corn certainly loves heat, especially in the carly stages of its. growth. One half the crop is doing well. The later sown connot germinate for want of moisture in the soil. Quite a reaction has sot in as to the value of fodder. Fodder that was scarcely saleable last winter is now considered as good as gold. Potatoes and garden stuff are in the same category with other crops. Pastures are not good and the sup ply of milk is diminishing. Jisitors : Mrs. W. Hanley and daughters, Leng and Mossi, with frinds at Battersea; Mrs. Wood, Hgr- tington, with friends here. School has closed for the holidays. Cole Lake Notes. Cole Lake, July 1.-The crops are looking better after the rain. 5. Mar. tin is improving his house with a new woodshed.
