When an idle member of the flock is noticed the others drive him away to live in soli- tude, and such a beaver found by a trapper is known as a bachelor. It takes the beavers but a short time to fell a large-sized tree, and they are able to threw it in any direction de- sired. When once felled. the tree is quickly cut up into length for houses, dams. or food, as may be required. The house of the beaver is built on the bank of the river, with its entrance under water. Once having built the entrance, the rest of the house is started. the whole colony working at the house until it is finished, and when completed it is warm, dry and cosy. Skins Are Valuable. Although it is impossible for. the { beavers to live for long under water, | the entrance is built for some dis- tance under the water, and then there is a long tunnel connecting the house with the water. A beaver family usual- ty consists of four or five, and comes into the world with its eyes wide open. The young ones live with their parents for two years, and then they are made to shift for themselves. The {ull-grown beaver measures about two feet in length, with a tail some ten inches long, which he can use as a spade or trowel as well as a paddle. The average age is fifteen years, al- thourh some have been known to be a= old as twenty. but such cases are anid to be rare. When the animal is nine years of age its pelt or skin is at its prime, and will fetch from twelve to fifteen dollars. CANADA'S NEW CITIZENS. Englishmen Coming This Way, But All Countries Contribute. Analysis of the Immigration Depart- ment's figures for the nine mouths ending March 31st, comprising the last fiscal period, shows that England is supplying by far the largest number of Canada's new citzens. After Eng- land comes the United States, and then in order of descending figures come Scotland, the Jews of Russia, Poland, Austria-Hungary, ete., Italy, Ireland, the Slavic races, India, Ja- pan, Germany, France and Sweden. Almost every country in the world sent its quota of immigrants to Can- ada last vear, but those just named were the most important contributors to the swelling tide of Canadian im- migration. From the United Btates there came during the nine months 34,658 new settlers, of whom over 2,500 were re- patriated Canadians. During the last four years "the American invasion" of the Canadian west has brought over the boundary a little over 150,000 people. of whom some 15,000 have been Canadians re-immigrating back home. British immigration for the past fiscal period totalled 55,791 as com- pared with 27 a2] for the same period of 1905-06. Of this number 41,658 were from England and Wales, 10,729 were from Scotland and 3,404 from Ireland. Of these Ontario got 18.344 English, 3.782 Scotch, 1,343 Irish, and 205 Welsh, Quebec got 6,314 English, 2,007 Scotch and 713 Irish. Canada is evidently becoming a popular-objective point for the haras- 4) Jews of Russia, Poland and Aus- tria-Hungary. A little over 6,000 of them came to the Dominion during the past fiscal period. Quebec Pro- vince seems to be their rendezvous. Nearly half the total number, or 2.- 864, settled in Quebec. Mormons In Canada. The. London Presbytery at its re- cent meeting discussed the subject of "The 'Mormons in Canada," and adopted the following overture to the General Assembly, submitted by Rev. W. H. Geddes of Ailsa Craig: "Whereas the presence of the Mor- mon element in certain parts of the Dominion and the danger thereby of the perpetuation of the practice of polygamy is a serious menace to morals of our land, and "Whereas the people of the United States have for years suffered very seriously from the same element. "This Presbytery overtures the As- sembly to take sueh action as will arouse the whole Church to the peril of those parts of the Dominion affect ed, and at the same time roach the other branches of the ristian Church to take joint action in the matter." Of their reference to his long trip to be of service, he said: --"The satis- faction I have received in witnessing your efforts to solve this problem is one of the greatest pleasures I have experienced since I took any interest in public affairs." x Women Celebrities In Jail.
