MONKEY MUST PAY ------ Full Rates at Hotel Lawrence. the arrival of the steamer Kingston at Alexandrian Bay, on Tuesday morning, there appeared something entirely new in the way of a summer visitor when a monkey at- tached to a long silver chain came down the gang plank. Iehind the monkey came Sire. H. R. Van Peltier, New York, and following her two maids, one carrying a basket lined with soft woollen to protect the ani- mal from the cold winds. Once off the boat and through the staring throng, the woman, the mon key and the two maids hurried along with a crowd at their heels. At the hotel desk there was some discussion regarding what should become of the monkey. The woman expostulated when the clerk 'said in a firm tone that the house would shelter no mon- keys. 'When the argument was at its height, and the woman, the monkey and the two maids were about to de rt, the proprictor stepped into the obby and after some talk allowed the animal to be taken to the woman's room. It was said at the desk that the monkey 'would bo charged full rates durlng his stay. OFFER TO PLANT BEDS On the Plots Around the Market Building. Mr. Lie berman and his family will be much tissed by their wide circle of friends in Kingston, who will wish them all prosperity in their new home. Automobile Parties. Several automobile parties were in the city, last evening and to-day. One composed of Messrs. A. G. Lewis, Dr. Stebbins, M. G. Means, H. Butler and E. J. Her maiden name was Adelia Ann Jeffery, and she was fifty-four years old: Mrs. Bed: borough leaves a grown-up family and her husband, who is a well-known cat- tle exporter. The ceunty canning factories have all been visited since beginning work, by the recently appointed government inspectors, of whom one of the two to come was a woman. They have expressed strictness in regard to sani- tation, and a canner told the Whig he was glad the regulations were to be kept this year to the letter. The wo- man's work will deal more particular: ly in overseeing the women engaged in the factory. At one factory the in- spe-tor ordered improvement in the drains to be made at once, and left. However, he slyly returned the follow- ing day to note the progress on his instructions. Luckily, the factory of- ficials had made haste and not neglect- od the work, thinking the "watch dog" gone, and the orders had heen carried out. The country lost two of its old resi- dents, Jast week, Mrs, Peck, a resident of Demorestville, died, aged eighty-{ eight, and Mrs. Gordon, also a resi-| dent of the same village, died, in her nineticth year. Better Than Ever This Year--Ex- pending Nearly $600,000. Great efforts are being put forth by the exccutive of the Canadian Nation- al exhibition, Toronto, to attract an extra large number of visitors, al- the magnificent total of three-quarters of a million. The expenditure this year will reach (including building ex- penses £400,000, premiums $50,000, special attractions $50,000, running ex- penses $75,000) close upon $600,000, a sum which far exceeds the expenditure ever made in one year by any annual exhibition on this or any: other con- tinent. Both in exhibits and in enter- tainment the Toronto exhibition, to be held from August 26th to Septem- ber 9th, promises to exceed in value and attractiveness anything that has ever boon attempted in Canada before. A number of the highest class attrac- tions have been secured, and some- thing like 810,000 is being spent upon a spectacular production ef the *'Siege of Badajos." with fireworks and an {army of men.
