SHABBY TREATMENT OF A MAN. _The railway compenics hate been re- garded as exacting in their Service, but at the same time as generous. WHITE. POLICEMEN ON STRIKE. | Looks Upon = Them As Different | From Industrial Employees. of Belfast, Ireland, has been enjoying something new and or- iginal in the way of strikes, in the form of a strike among policemen, though they are called constabulary in Great Britain. Belfast is a city of 350,000 people and its constabulary munbers about 1,200 men. They are appointed by the government, and though the cost of their maintenance is levied upon the municipality they serve under the direction of the, gov- ernment authorities at Dablin. Belfast has just been through a strike of dock hands, which was at- tended by considerable violence and imposed much extra labor on the con- stabulary. They, have a grievance of long standing in the matter of pay, which is very small, even in compari- son"with Dublin and other cities in Irland. © Recommendations have twice been made by commissions for increas- ing their pay, but the government has never acted on them. . ? They considered the close of the in- dustrial strike a good time to urge their claim for more pay, and gave the government a week to take ac tion. The government, however, look- ed upon the matter as a very differ- ent thing from a strike among indus- trial employees. As spon as the de- mands of the men wére mceived in i Our $2.00 Derby Hat. The sympathy of the public seems to be strongly on the side of the econstabul- | ary, but the present disturbances are not likely to mprove the, standing of the latter with the government, and order will have to be festored before anything is done in the way of con- sidering their grievances, Gananoque, Brockville Ogdensburg.
