"The fact*that he had suspended sentence hanging over his head for a former conwiction, »did not prevent John Burgoyne. brought to the peni- tentiary, this week, by Deputy Sheriff Jurvis, of Toronto, from again fall- ing into the ways of the evildoer. On July 31st last, Burgovne was convicted in Toronto, of the theft of a suit of clothes and a ring. On that occasion, upon the urgent plea of his counsel, and in consideration of the young wife and child of the prisoner, Judge Morgan, who tried the vase, al- lowed him to go on suspended sen- tence, The judge hoped that Burgoyne would turn over a new leaf. But the hope was futile. As already stated; this chance was given the prisoner on the last day of July. During the sec- ond week of August, he was again behind the bars, this time being charged with forgery. » Then there was nothing for it but that the sentence which Judge Mor- gan had suspended, 'must fall, and fall heavily, And the sentence, pro- nounced was five years in the pehi- Ftentiary. The boats of 'lis fleet were many. times unadle to car ry the large loads from Islanl ) oints.
