AT THE POLICE COURTS. Two Cases Before the Magistrate To-Day. The first hour ) of Magistrate Far- rell"s time, at the police court, this morning, was taken up in hearing a non-payment of wages case, in which the plaintiff lost. The amount in- volved was $1.60. Rosetta Carroll, an English girl, out a few months from the old country, claimed the amount from the Domin- ion Textile company, where she had been employed a fow weeks. Several of. the office staff were call- ed, and the evidence went! to show that the plaintiff was not entitled to the sum asked, and the magistrate dismissed the charge. The plaintiff was offered her salary, on Friday last, {but refused to accept it, saying that it was not the correct sum. The girl's father, who appeared in court, was instrumental in having the case go to court, and from the evidence, it was learned that he went to the cot- ton mill with his daughter, every pay day, to sce that she got what was due her. William Pollitt was charged with ill treating a horse. The complaint was lodged by Campbell MeCnllum. Mr. McCallum said that he exam- ined the horse on September 12th, and the animal gave evidence of having been ill-treated. Marks on the right side showed that the horse had been beaton and overdriven. It appeared as i the buttend of a whip had been used, Inspector Arniel, humane satiny of- ficer, gave evidence. He did not see the horse, but witness told him that he would have to plead guilty to the charge of ill-using the horse. In order to secure further evidence, the case was enlarged until Friday.
