LOCKET, $15.00 HELP THEMSELVES LORD AVEBURY HAS OLD AGE PENSION SCHEME. e-- Has Formulated a Plan to Offset the Proposition of the Socia- lists. London, Oct. 24.--Lord "Avebury and other economists hgye formulated an old age pension plan to offset the so- cialist propositibns. The scheme is based on the encouragement and as- sistance of persons willing to make some sacrifice to entitle themselves to pension. It is suggested the govern- ment, should co-operate with the vari- ous friendly societies, receiving from them contributions of candidates for pensions and allowing interest on them at 3% per cent. By commencing at 20 years of age to pay one pound, self to a pension of $1.76 a week at sion. At the age of 70 pensions at lower and higher rates interest would be respectively $3.36 and $5.16, so the pension becomes nearly 50 per cent. more at 34 than wt 2] per cent. This extra 1 per cent. is additional to the 23 which the government allows on friendly societies funds invested on a foundation of the pension system, and Lord Avebury points: out that even if the total fund collected were $500, 000,000, interest at 1 per cent. would only amount to half the sum Asquith has set aside for: the government pen: sion scheme. > NEWS OF DISTRICT.
