Owing to the Fly Wheel Not Be- ing Protected As Required By Law--The Great Road Race is on. Montreal, Nov. 9.1. Charles David- son, of the tin plate manufacturing firm of Thomas Davidson & Sens, one of the largest tin plate manufacturing firms in the dominion, was arrested, this morning, on a charge of man- slaughter. The arrest was made in connection with, the death of Henri Rousseau, who met death bv being caught in a fly wheel on the premises of the company. Davidson was held criminally responsible for Rousseau's death by the coroner's jury, on the ground that the wheel was not pro- tected as required by law. He was re- leased on personal bail of $1,000, and two sureties of $500 each. To-day's weather conditions are ideal for the fifteen-mile king's birth- day road race. Outs, of the total course the managers state that only three miles will be heavy going. The day is bright and cool, but not frosty, Although th® Central and West End harriers, of Toronto, complain that the route is hilly, President Lithgow, of the Halifax association, states that the course is better than that over which the recent race was run at Hglifax. All the runners say they realize that they are up against the greatest aggregation of long distance runners . ever gathered together in Canadg, but that they are in for the finish. St. Petersburg, Nov. 9.--The talk of the possibility of a war between the United States and Japan, which, throughout has been taken seriously in Russia, is now bringing many volunteers to the American embassy, who say they are anxious to serve in the United Statés army in case -of hostilities. A report is also circula- ted in military circles here that the American army in the Philippines needs instructors, especially for the artillery and engineer corps. Five or six Russian officers of these branches of the service apply' daily at the embassy for commissions. Ponies' Two-Mile Swim. QUEEN'S THEATRE NIGHT The Cyclone Musical Success, of the late James Gordon was largely attended. That so many were keen to buy and pay a good price, would seem to indicate that people are not at all discouraged with present prospects. Stock, of course, is cheap, but not so cheap considering the abnormably high price of feed. Cows went at from £9.50 to $15; horses, from $40 to $85; hay, $18.50 per ton; straw (in bulk), accordingly dear; oats, 6lc. per bushel. E. Taylor has returned after visiting his brother at Owen Sound, who is very ill. The increased number of scholars has made it necessary to sup- ply more seats for the school. J. Redden has completed hig job of build- ing a bridge on the Quobin Road. The inevitable tax colleétor has come and gone, and it is found that taxes are much higher than last year. The lo- cal weather prophet will have it that we will have a lot of fine open weath- er vet, People are beginning to speculate as to who will be candidates and who will not in the coming municipal elec- tion.. The consolidated debt of the county will be wiped out in 1909. A question' often asked is, Who is re- sponsible for repairs to the York Road ? We wonder why our county fathers did not settle this matter be- fore they abolished the toll gates. Would some one who knows arise and explain ? Considering the deplorable state of the roads, would it not pay the township to purchase a stone crusher ¥ Would it not be well to de- bate this question on nomination day ? GIFT OF FIVE POUNDS. To .General Hospital For Kind- ~ ness to An Englishman. Miss Hunter, secretary of the Gen- eral Hospital, received a letter to- day, from England, containing five pounds ($24.35). The letter was from Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Poole, widow of the late Francis Poole, an Englishman who died in the institution on Febru- ary 13th, 1874. With the cheque was a letter saying that the money was forwarded to the hospital Tor the kindness shown to her husband during his illnegs in the city, away from all relatives and personal friends. The letter said that J. J. Butrows, was honorary secretary at the time the man died Miss Hunter looked up the old re- cords and found that the name was in the hospital and' died on the above date, and that he was cared for by the Masons. The order cared for the man while he was ill and had charge of his funeral, a letter such as the above is received hy the hospital, especially so long ai- ter the death had happened. Gull Lake Items.
