Doubtless many Whig readers will re-| member the manly form. of Robert Ralph Carr-Harris, third som of FPro- fessor Carr-Harris, who graduated from the R. M. C. of Canada in the class of 1903, teceiving his diploma with hon ors for no less than eleven subjects of the college course of fifteen subjects. He was awarded the Sword of Honor for his conduct'in his final year; was senior C.S.M. of Cadets and captam of the RM.C hockey team. He was of- fered a position m the Imperial army | and was gazetted lieutenant m adian cavalry, Fourth Hussars (the County of Frontenac Corps). He was on the engineering staff of the Cataract Electric Power Co, of Niagara Falls, under R. W. Leonard, who was an- other RM.C. boy in 1904. He was also resident engineer, Canadian Pacific Railway construction, at Goderich from 1904 to 1907, under P. A. Petersony CE. and built two large bridges across the Maitland river. "Then he was appointed assistant engineer to the chief engineer of Canton Hankow Railway in South China, seven hundred and forty miles, in April, 1907. At the age of sixteen he crossed Chilceot Pass, twenty-four times having taken a contract © pat Major Walsh and Northwest Mounted Police over the pass, which he success- fully accomplished. The RM. C, boys and Queens Coll students of that ember him as "Klondyke me having been ai- unt of his work on _ along the Chilcoot ad one of the best known and successful hockey players of Canada, being on the match East against West, selected team from all- Canadian players, by the Ontano Hoc- key Assiciation, and was in those days r the Canadian Harris, fixed to him og the Klondyke Pass. Mr. Har correctly described by ie press as "a clean, strong ' gentlemanly player." . It was the subject Of this sketch with whom Duncan "champion swordsman of Am clined to cross swords mn' Lode year, Ross having previously challenge to all "comers : From the Goderich Signal of week, we clip the following acco from an eye-witness of Robert Ralph Carr-Harris' skill with a repeating illustrating that the old R M.C. tra ing stood him mn good stead in the of danger The following 1s letter from John gineer for a Railway, China, mm wh account of the experiences of himself and R. Carr-Harns in a uger- hunt. The letter is dated at Canton, October 1st. Mr. Hutton "We exciting experience the otl ing a real live man-caung tiger. is my story of the affair: On the morn- issued a resident + Yueh-Han h he gives a had a very her day hunt- Here says ing of the 28th at breakfast, our cook brought us news 3 fad been seem ih a that thie neighboring village away with all the pigs, dogs, etc days previous to this they away two of the native women who had been working in the rice paddies. Har- ris, myself, and three of our bodyguard at once organized 3 real tiger hunt, and started off, being, armed with one rifle apiece, besides our revolvers Arriving at the village where the ugers were supposed to be. we started on our pen lous task of locating the brutes, but after about fifteen minutes m the jun- gle a native brought us news that they had gone off to the next village ha mile away. Off we started on the for the mext village, eager for our prey, and entered the jungle agam At this time the heat was almost unbearable and 1 was about all in. At last we dis covered one in some thick brush. We could not see him, but by the move ment of the bushes we knew he "was there all right, and then things began to get exciting "We were only fifty feet when Harris opened fir following in rapid success On firing my rifle discovered that thing wotlld not go off, owing ta the needle and had been doing from him the guards the the ha at he be I had to stagd. fook at the beast, not in the best of humors you may be sure. R was very hard luck. Well, Harris fired when suddenly Mr. Tiger leaped out of} the Can-|paddiés. h September, while sitting wo had taken four; more shots in rapid succession, his lair with two great big jumps and made directly for us, at the same time giving two most unearthly roars. 1 tell you what, it Jooked as if it was going to be all up with us. Harris had only two 'more shots left; 'which he fired at point blan® range. I being directly be- hind him and the rest having run away it looked very biue, but these two shots which Harris fired made = the brute change his mind, for suddenly he veer- ed off to ou left, apparently very badly wounded, and took to the tice fields. It all happened sb quickly that @® had not time to pull out my revolyer. We started in pursuit, but for some time lost all traces, until a pative told-us that he had seen him on the other side of the village. On arriving there we saw our tiger grappling with a native in the rice coming ap. to the man, and also Mr. Tiger, for he was almost dead, having stccumbed to the wounds he had received, we found the man terribly mutilated and bleeding from at least twenty "wounds. We hastily dressed them up with our handkerchiefs and told some coolies to carry him to our statioh, where we would properly at- tend to him. He will recover, I think: "Four men were required to carry our prize to Yuen Tam, and when he ar- rived we found that he measured seven feet from tip to tip and weighed 130 pounds. The skin is a beauty. Mr Harris has sent it down to Canton to be tanned. That's about all there is to tell now, except that Harris and I think it has been the most thrilling and ex- citing time in our lives.
