More accommodation for prisoners must very soon be provided in 'the county jail, which will not hold near- ly all who are likely to be sent there during the winter. Able-bodied men who are now posing as vagrants and seeking shelter at the police station will have to be run out of the city as soon as they come in. Kingston has enough of its own poor to ep with- out supplying the wants of worthless individuals who are coming here with the intention of getting a berth in the jail for the winter. Some mean have been sleeping in the police cells who should be ashamed of themselves, for there is no reason why they should not have put aside some money for a needy period. As the city pays a big share of the jail expenses, there is no reason why the services of the prisoners should not be utilized for civic work as well as that around the court house pre mises. The board of works is pur chasing some quarry lots so that there may be a good supply of stone for the roads next spring. The stone is to be broken during the winter. Ald. Gaskin might arrange to get the services of a number of the prisoners who are being kept at the expense of the city. Then every. able-bodied man who applies for shelter at the police station might be put to work break- ing stone in the new quarry lots, and given his meals as well. If this me- thod was adopted. Kingston would soon be rid of these worthless va. grants. Osborn Jury Disagrees. Rochester, N.Y., Dec.
