The impetuosity which caused his separation from Sir John Macdonald caused his separa- tion also from Sir Wilirid Laurier. His rashocss as a minister, in the absence of his leader in England, led to his retirement first from the wov- ernment and then from parliament. Later he devoted himself entirely to journalism, and the readers ol la Patrie realized it. As a man of large ability, and one who made his influence felt in public opinion and public life, he will be kindly remembered. He suffered some- what in his political advances, but. he held his personal friends because of the geniality of his character. His late silence was due to his illness, and his voice is one that, now hush- od, will be greatly missed. EDITORIAL NOTES. Great Moment, For Home January 3rd. From Our Own Correspondent. Oitawa, Dec. 19.--Contrary to general expectation the house con- tinued the discussion upon the Japan- ese immigration question, yesterday af ternoon, before rising for the Christ- mas recess, Mr. Borden drew attention to the silence of the government in face of the protests from British Columbia 'i berals. He demanded the assurances from the Japanese government which Duncan Ross had asserted to exist. These assurances had been communica- ted to the British Columbia members and he said it was a strange thing that the information had been with. Seld from the house. In talking of the question whether the attitude of the Dominion govern- cited imperial considerations Mr. Borden said that in 1905 the asser. lion was twice made by the govern ment that = the Natal act was disal- lowed because it was ultra vires, and contrary to Dominion policy. Also, Mr. Chamberlain, when colonial secre- tary, had addressed to Lord Minto two substantially. identical despatches on the subject.
