The prisoner had a cup of water in his hand, and was about to take a drink, when the officer was startled to see him open the window and leap out. It all happened in such a hurry, that the officer was taken by sur prise. He did not lose his presence of mind, , 'and he made a grab for his n, securing hold of him by one arm, and holding fest. The train was travelling about thirty-five miles an hour at the time, and scene oner, from the outside, was endeavor- ing to free himself from the clutches of the law, and he was in such a posi- tion, that the officer found that it would be impossible to pull him into the coach again. The train was stopped as soon as possible, and the deputy sheriff and the jailer vet out in pursuit. The officers drove back to North Bay, and came on to Toronto yesterday afternoon, leaving on the night train for Kings ton, The prisoner was hiding in the gellar of the house, when the officers reathed him Upon arrival in the city, the offiecfs layed Raymond in a cell at the po- oe station, where he spent the night, about 'ten o'clock. Raymond had a miraculous escape. One little scratch on his right arm was the only mark that he received. The fact that he fell in the snow, no doubt, saved him from serious injury. TEN YEARS, the Bachelor's The Verdict on Looked From Their Frames oa Lovelier Woman Than Graced =t. "The most beautiful ball which has been seen in Kingston for ten years" was the verdict concerning the Bach- alelors' ball, in the City Hall night. An old Kingstonian, back in town for a time, saic' he never knew the city fathers, of years gone by, to have the pleasure of looking down on fairer women, wore becoming gowns or prettier decorations than they saw last night. The music was perfeot, the very best Merry's orchestra could give; encores wers many apd the mus- ical committee, Messrs, R. R. Harvey, E. Gildersleevée and James Swift, were heartily congratulated again and again. One of the pleasantest fea- tures of the affair was the number of mearied people who went and helped the younger people to enjoy them- selves, as kindly elders always do. The platform was arranged as a idrawing-room, with palms, flowers, r and easy chairs, and made a delightful sitting-out place, and a com- fortable look-out on gaiety below. On- tario hall, too, where supper was held, was very prettily decorated, There were plenty of waiters and the supper, partaken of at guartette tables, delicious, All the chaperones were present, {Mrs. W.
