The evil shows itsell on so many public occasions, says our coutempor- ary, and it quotes the advice given by Dr. Mills, jormerly of the Agricultural College, now a member of the rail- way commission: "When called upon as soon as yol get on your feet. THE H. D. THE LAW OF DEFAMATION. An Able Review By John King, K. C., Toronto. The work of John King, K.C., ' re cently published by the Carswell Co., of 'Toronto, on the law of defamation of Canada, is of special interest to the newspdper press, as well as useful to the general public. It id a trdatise of 936 pages on the prineiples of | the common law and the statutes of the provinces concerning' libel: "and dlan- der as civil wrongs, with the articles of the criminal code of Uanada con- cerning libel as an indictable offence. Being the only Canadian book on the subject, it is much needed: The 'un- ruly tongue and pen survive, 'and there is probably nothing which a man values more than Ris character and reputation. At this time are pending about fifty actions for libel, growing out of a single criminal pro: secution. A book containing the law of Canada, French as well as English, on the subject, and alsq the lealling English and United States decisions, must be invaluable to a lawyer in general practice. The publishers pay, as is generally known, that "the au- thor of this work is an expert in these branches of the law. ' He was for many years the professional adviser of the association of Canadian Journal ists, prepared a number of the statu- tory amendments of the law of libel, civil and criminal, and wis consulted by those in charge of the legislation in its passage through the provijcial and federal legislatures. He 'has also a wide practical acquaintances with the law of defamation in the general prac- tice of his profession." "The Canadian Law Times. a com- petent critic, remarks: "Ii tha ma- terial were merely thrown "together, the book would be useful.
