When a male citizen of Russia tains the age of twenty-one he summoned before the military official in the district in which he lives and is compelled to undergo a mental and physical test. If he be found defec- tive in either, he is from service in the army. A story is told of a young man try- ing to escape duty, who tried the following trick : The day of his examination having arrived, he appeared at the military depot ready to be examined. Being capable of twisting the thumb of his right hand back ip sich a manner as to rendler him incapable of grasping anything, he did so, and explained to his examiners the absurdity of en- listing him, since he was unable to even hold a gun. The applicant, being prepared, evad ed the truth so skilfully that he was about to be excused, when on second thought the doctor asked : "In what position was your thumb before it be- came dislocated ?"' "Why, so!" he, without thinking, answered, straightening it into its na- tural position. Still another story is told of one, treing to. escape from duty, pretend ing to be deaf. ¢ "What's your dame ?"' asked official. _ "Twenty-one," he answered, looking innocent. "No; what's your name ?"' again queried the official. The applicant ex- plained that he was deaf. Thus, every question: put to him had to be re peated several times before the cor- rect answer cotild be obtained. The examiner, being unable to find anything wrong with: the applicant's hearing apparatus, hit upon a plan w which to test the truth of his claim. "Take your valise and go home," he said in a low voice, iturpin- away The applicant snatched his valise.and ~but he was flopped. at- is excused the A Devonshire Joke. « A few. days ago a Devonshire show- man played a piactical joke at Barn staple. Naturally, a good many people paid their two-pences and en- tered the tent, which was empty save for a big dog wearing a large meta! collar, but no "wusical dog" was visible. At last impatience mastered curiosity, amd om) of the audience asked the showman when the per. formance was going to begin. He seemed much surprised at the ques. tion and made for the tent door.
