He was 'taken | suddenly ill on Sunday evening, and ton Monday was in a serious condi ition. Dr. Sparks had been attending { him previously and was again called in, but could not save his life. The | remains were removed to R. J. Reid's undertaking rooms, this morning. The deceased, who was forty-eight years old, had been in this country six vears, and leaves a wile and family in Chinn. The local Chinese colony were ter. ribly shocked when one of their num- ber passed away, and as they have not any leader or head man here, they were badly used up fof a time, Lee Jue, formerly propristor of the re sfaurant, and now in Montreal, was sent for and arrived this afternoon to take charge of the body. It is likely that the remains will be buried in Cataraqui- cemetery, The deceased was a 'Christian, and attended one of the Methodist Sabbath schools in the city. The funeral service wii likely he held on Wednesday. i Lee Pank is the first Chinaman to die in this city. Wherever one of them takes sick, he always leaves for home, if he thinks it is serious, as the Chinese have a great horror of dving outside their own comntry, or awny from their priests and friends. -------------- CIvIC COMMITTEES, Waterworks and the Board of Works Convene. The waterworks committee met yes- terday afternoon, with Ald. Craig (chairman), Couper, Graham, Hanley and Chown in attendance. The offer of the Donnelly Wrecking company to purchase the old pump at The pump house for $50 was accepted. A petition of James MeCammon for a water main on Victoria street was referréd back to him for the signature of more property owners. The petition of John McKee and others for a water main on Barrie street, between John street and Rag- Jan Road, was granted, The. board of works met yesterday afternoon, and decided to recommend to the city council that certain trees on George street he eit down in or: der to construct a concrete walk, The failure of the council to meet last ev- ening will delay matters somewhat. It was decided to recommend the granting of the Kingston and Pem- broke Railway company's petition to erect poles on Ontario street. The council will be asked to grant permission to Alfred Buck and L. Spooner to rebuild their porticos on Union street, on the same ground as before, It was decided to recommend the cutting down of three trees at the cor- ner of University avenue and Union street, Council Had No Quorun. A special meeting of the city council was called for last evening, to con- sider an application from the Kings- ton and Pembroke Railway edmpany for permission to erect a line of poles on Ontario street, from Brock street to Place d'Armes, for a despatch wire. The political gathering in the city hall, however, was too much of a eounter-attraction, and when the elerk called the roll at 8.05 o'clock, there was no quoram. Only seven or eight members of the council were present, Making Good Fellows. The government has increased in less than five vears the provincial expendi- ture hy sixty per cent. That is to say, has increased the expenditure $1 per head of the population, while the liberal government only increased it 81 por head in thirty-two vears ol power. This is the record of the par- ty that promised the people economy when it got into power, The Whitnev government spent, last year. in entertainment dinners and hospitality to visitors, 316.965, while the Ross government, in 1903 and 1904, its last vears, spent only $150 for a similar purnose. This was only mentioned as a type of the lavish seale of expenditure upon which the people's money was wasted. Conservative Declaration, Toronto: News. Mr. Whitney and his colleagues as trustees of the money and resources of Ontario, have nothing to do with the manner in which the people of Kingston choose to use the franchise, It is their duty to pav exactly the same attention to representations made bv Mr. Pense a= it would to re- presentations made hy a conservative member for Kingston. Certain expen- ditures are either warranted or not by the requirements of pulilie serviee: the number of liberal or conservative votes east has nothing to do with the decision. Drink For Health.
