By orders of 'the Trade and Labor Council THOS. LETTERS TO THI THE EDITOR. Concerning the Use 0 Use of Dynamite at Cobalt. Desert Lake, July 4--4{To the Edit or): I have seen in. your issue cf July 2nd a letter written by Andrew Leeman, complaining of the way that powder is handled at Cobalt. Now, Mr. Editor, a man that is capable ol running a 'machine drill is capable of loading and firing the holes that are drilled by him, and it is the custom in most of the mines in Canada jor drillers to load: and fire the holes. As for the inspection of mines by mining inspectors, Mr. . Leeman overstepped the mark, for the mines, could not be looked after any. better than they are by tlie mining inspectors of Ontario. Perhaps Mr. Leeman would like the inspectorship, then he might be able to regulate the loading of holes, and the handling of dynamite,. iy which he might have 'to take lessons himself. How could Mr. Leeman tell in firing a number of holes if one should miss fire ? There is always a pile of broken ground after a round, of holes are fired and there is no driller who will let up on loose ground. There are people in Cobalt that could teach An- drew Leeman something about load- ing holes and handling dynamite and still there are times that they.cannot tell when a hole does not go with the rest until the muck is partly cleared away. Mr. Leeman also states in his letter that there are a number of men, blown to pieces each month. If My. Leeman would look at last year's min- ing report he would find that there was only ome accident, of, this kind. It happened i in 1906, at the Kerr Lake silver mine, when George Rush and E. Girouard drilled into the bottom of a H, FLEMING. HA ¥ Ai dl MEN, 'AT ONUE ON SALARY eXpenges.
