FaT-- i Romance of King Charles and the Fe Famous Oak = Revived By | Lawyer's Discovery--Gratitude of Stewart, ° London, Aug 1.~In the year 1651, [pedis after the disastrous battle of WorgeSter, King Charles II, flying | from pursuing Re: was succoured {by a loyal farmer named Richard Pen- {derel, who hid the King amid the foliage | of an oak tree--which has came down | through history as the "Boscobel oak." { The soldiers sought for the hidden King {in vain, and Charles II, in gratitude for the honest farmer's services, gave him a pension of $300 a year, which he or- dered was to be paid to Penderel and his heirs for ever. For seven generations the pension was paid without' interruption, until, in the year 1839, two men, James With- mgton and Robert MacLaren, both des- cendants of the original James Penderel, {were sharing the pension between them. Both decided to s¢ll their life interest nthe pension. -Mackaren, with the sym which he realized, became a cab- owner ; Withington, stating his intention of going abroad, disappeared completely. In December last year, Messrs. Petch and Co., .a firm of solicitors, put the facts of Withington's disappearance be- fore the public, with a view to discover- ing what. had became of the missing man, and if he had lefgany children be- nnd mm. But no ngs ot value reached the solicitors until a few weeks ago, when they received a letter from a Mrs. Shotton, who lives in Wolver- hampton. She claimed 3 be a half- sister of the James Withington who had disappearéd. A representative of the firm went to see her, and established, to his satisfac- ion. her chim of relationship. She de- scribed to him how, when a child, she had heard of James Withington being ywned 'ih the Kaver Avon. Lhe olicitors therétipon made exhaustive mquiries, "but no record could be found at Somerset House of James Withing- toni's death. But what they found was that an uiknown man had been drowned in the Avon, near Warwick, at a time which corrésponded with Mrs. Shotton's recollection of her half-brother's death. Seeing that 'the age of this unknown man! corresponds with that of James Withington, 'and the description also tallies, the courts will be asked during the next. sittings to presume his death. In the gourse of hs inquiries the so- licitors' representitive also ( scovered authentic. proof of the birth and death of. Withington's only son. The result of this romantic search will be that if the judgé presumes the missing James Withington's death his share of the pension, amounting to $5 a week, will revert to his old associates, Robert Mac- Laren, who is still alive and in Lon- don, although considerably over 70 years of age. Ihe windfall will be extremely wel come to him, seeing that his busines as a cab owner and. cab driver proved unsuccessful and that he has been: living for many years in a state of poverty a -------------------------- Footwear! wh ekd § 5 To Make Room for a Large Increase in Stock lL. i8 All Summer Footwear at 20 Per Cent.
