A brace of words highly expressive in the days of the rugged old founder of the Whig occur at this moment, after a glance at the childish effusion of the "managing director and edit tor" of the Standard of Monday even: ing--bosh and balderdash ! It is very like the simpering grievings of the pet- ted child who smashes his toys and blames everybody and everything but his own wilfulness. When the Whig is accused of not discussing issues, and is reminded that loss of temper is not dignified, there is fresh evidence of an acute form of mental aberration in the Standard sanctum. The Whig discuss. ed companies and politics. Forthwith the Standard switched off to. its pet aversion and applied to the Whig the choice phrases--"snarling"--*'shewing fangs"--"leopard"-- "knocker" --"yelp- ing cayotte"-- picking at the bone" -- "shafts of malice' --"'nigger in the fence"--'wood-pile"-- "barnyard style." That was a noble sample of discussing the issue, a fine a grand exhibition of another of the not "forgiving us "'slinking behind'{-- show of culture, temper, and for sweet many reasons for being a newspaper gent'--again Then, too, was the very common impression that an article given to United States papers of wide circulation was no longer private and the culture. personal; still if its author has special privileges of impersonality and should not be rated by the plain-speaking press as an apostate Canadian, let it Most persons bold would be manful '"More- be proclaimed. enough to criticize enough to stand the recoil. the names, penitent, "any to which the says one can call a fact on the corner the Stan- or is he so blackguard Surely commonest can bear. witness." dard writer is not sane, driven into a corner for argument that he utters any silly thing that oe- curg to him. To see men going home at noon on Sunday in a staggering state is common. The Whig is not defending in- fluential companies or law-breakers in its wrong-doing. This is the especial joy of the Standard. * The newspaper which started out with the axe and the "yelping coy- otte" yell and the "barnyard" style, and the "leopard plunge," has been converted and has remained to pray --for better style, higher standards for really discussing issues without abus- ing tivals. and if lasting, will be to,its credit and comfort. The naging director and editor rushed across the street to tell a Whig man that he had been urged but that he was not going to do it. He would have stood much higher in public estimation if he had stood to his text--attended to his own knit- ting, His measure has now been taken. A second article in the Standard of Friday was unnoticed until Monday. It is there declared that it is "abso- lutely false" "that the manager of the Standard, or anyone for him, offered a position to any member of the Whig staff." Here js a fair test of veracity. Three members' of the Whig stall say that they received offers, from him direct; two others were so led by him to believe that the enquiries were fish- ing offers that they promptly express- ed their disinclination to make a change, and one received several in- direct hints from other persons that his services would be acceptable. is untrue that the manager of the Whig lately made or suggested or authorized, or even heard proposed offers to two of the Standard's em- ployees, or more or less of them. The unreliability of statement we have shown makes it also extremély doubt- ful that Whig employees offered them- selves - over the way. Dr. Hutchinson has~ lately, in the familiar United States, written a treatise to prove that moral and physical conditions are not far apart. This is a warning that should not 'be lightly 'disregarded. j EDITORIAL NOTES, Tammany Hall is out for Bryan and the spoils of office.
