MUST HURRY SKETCHES FOR NEW DOME FOR CITY BUILDINGS. > -- City" Property Committee Wants Thém Next Thursday--Sim- moms Bros. Get Contract For City [Buildings Plumbing. The city property commiittee met at 3.30 o'clock 'yesterday "aiternoon to consider plumbing tenders Tor work in| the city buildings and in regard to the dome to > be erected. Present were: Aldermen Angrove (chairman), * Gra- bam, McCartney, Couper and Free. Ald. Angrove said that when the, dome was to be rebuilt, some plumb- ing in the buildings might be done at The board of health some time ago had reported regarding the unsanitary condition of the basement @f the build- ings. It is advisable therefore, to -re- arrange the plumbing. Ald. McCartney wanted to know if it was advisable to award a cdntract Le- fore it was known how far down into the buildings the dome reconstruction would go. ] |] Ald. Angrove said that the plumb- ing work required would not be reach- ed by any dome construction. Akl Graham remarked, that so far as he could find out, the most of the alder- men were in favor of repairing the dome, and not of tearing it down al- together. Four tenders were received for the work of plumbing, ventilating, electri cal work, conerete work and plaster- ing certain parts, They were: McKel- vey & Birch $650; Taylor & Hamil- ton, $198: Lemmon & Sons, $495; Simmons Bros., $113.60. On motion of Ald. Graham the con- tract was awarded to the lowest ten- derers, Simmons Bros. The chairman reported that Archi- tect Power was proceeding with' the plans for the new dome as rapidly as he could. He had not, however, been taking info consideration the mere re- pairing of the dome, so the chairman said he had asked the architect to re- port on this also. He also asked him to give an estimate of heating the cast. wing of the buildings and of re- novating the offices in that wing. Fhis action of the chairman was com- mended. Ald. Grabam said, that the commit- tee should have th¥ plans just as soon as possible.' It was not necessary to prepare elaborate plans. What the committee wanted was rough sketches that it could decide on what scheme it would agopt. Ald. Graham said that the architect should be told to hurry the® sketches as the commit- tee couldn't wait much longer. "Would you go up and have a talk with him ?"' said the chairman. "No, I won't go up. What talk there'll be, it will be in this commit- tee," replied Ald. Graham. : "I move," said Ald. Graham, "that Mr. Power be requested to hustle the sketches along and have them ready for the committee by this day week." The motion was carried unanimous- ly, and the committee immediately arose. S80 Was A Small Blaze. At 8:30 o'clock, , this morning, the firemen received, an alarm from box 23 at the Y.M.CIA. corner. The scene of the blaze' was at the residence of Mrs. Suddard, 36 Barrie' street, near the laundry: Defective pipes caused a small blaze, which was soon extinguished without any damage be- ing done. The big bell in St. Mary's cathedral is of no use to warn firemen who are out exercising their horses or who are off duty, if it is always used as it was this morning. Dy the toll of ithe bell one could not tell whether for church, for a funeral or for a fire, stove it was the same time, so as to make one job. | INCIDENTS OF THE DAY.
