"I'h to put a big domg on the town buildings like the one on St. George's cathedral". said the' Lampman 'as we walked up Princess street late last night. "Qrely the city council wouldn't sanction such a thing. The dome on St. George's is not ar- tistic, in fact its entirely ill-fitted for the building on which it rests. We want a perfectly proportioned dome on our fife old town- buildings. The suggestion that the old dome be just repaired is outrageous. Will the people of Kings- ton allow a cheap looking structure to be placed on the grand stone buildings ? I hope the town property committee will have more sense than to recommend such a thing." The Lampnmian wag en- raged at the mere suggestion of patch- ing the dome, : ad hoped the "big" men of the council would overrule the alder- men of small ideas. " "> aw Another thing the Lampman wanted to discuss was the street paving ques- tion, "I don't see much hope for street paving to begin," he said, "until a block or two of merchants come for- ward and ask that an experimént be made at their expense." If a canvasser was sent oft, the Lampman said he be- lieved that Were would be so many di- vergent viewd\that even the lawyers of the town council would not be able to find two alike. Oh. but we're so slow in Kingston, he sadly said. He believed that the future welfare of the town lay in ealling "Tom™ McAuley into the counsels of the aldermen, for he was sure that this veteran could formulate a scheme whereby it would be possible to begin the paving of the roads at a very early date. - The Bookseller joined us, and" intro- duced the topic of Divine healing. He said he couldnt understand how people separated the healing "of their ills tnrough the agency ot a physician from healing by an apparent miracle. All healing was Divine healing, he claimed, and he thought it out of place for people to look upon it otherwise. He was glad to read of a recent case in Kingston, where a young wpman had faith enough to leave her bed of illness and declare that she was healed. There Reporters On ie Try Bibby's swell $2 bats. The Whig writer is also, in a measure, correct when he affirms that the two examina. tions were about equally difficult' (as far as the questions went, hg means. ) He forgets, however, that foreign lan- guages are required for junior matri- culation, nope for junior leaving. He forgets also to inform his readers (and this is more important) that to pass the junior leaving examination forty per cent. of each subject is required, and sixty per cent. of the total, while for junior matriculation only thirty- three per cent. of each separate sub- ject is exacted. The writer ought also to know bet- ter than to insinuate that the ex- er inues are meve lenient in the case of the junior leaving examination with small than with large schools. The examiners do not knoy whose papers they are reading nor whence these papers came. To prove the fallacy of the Whig expert's statement, it is only necessary to cite the instance of the Owen Sound Collegiate Institute. This is one of the largest schools in the province outside of the big cities. In | this school fifty candidates wrote on the junior leaving and forty-nine pass- ed. Some time ago another Whig writer, perhaps the same educational expert and pedagogical philosopher, gave utterance to the excellent view that our Collegiate Institute's ideals are loftier than the mere passing of vul- gar . examinations. This is indeed good, but if these praiseworthy ideals passed in history.
