Detrgit, Mich., Aug. 20.-- John Galvin, 285 Selden avenue, went through a re- markable operation im Grace hospital yesterday. About four years ago Gal: vin, who .is a member of the firm of Hazen & Galvin, contractors, was standing under a scaffold superintend- img work on St. Mary's academy at Monroe, when a workman accidentally dropped a avy plank, which struck (alvin 'on the chest, just over the heart. Several days later a 'small lump appeared, but Galvin paid no attention to it. The lump grew until recently it be- came about as large a two-quart measure He consgled a physician, who diagnosed thie trouble as aortic aneurism. The lump was filled with blood, its only covering being the skin. An artery leading from the heart had been ruptured and the blood flowing from the heart formed the anenrism. "To have lanced the growth would have meant sudden death," sail Dr. H. L. Obetz, who concluded that the only safe treatment was electrocution. A specially prépared insulated hollow needle was run through the skin at the weakest. part of the lump, A fine silver wire about 15 feet long was then in- serted. This was attached to a bat- tery and 8o. milliamperes of electricity were turned on. This current was al- lowed to flow for about an hour and a half, electrocuting the blood win the aneurism and causing it.to clot. Thus the danger of the blood breaking the skin and causing instant death was lessened, and to-day Galvin's chances of recovery are good. The physicians who assisted Dr. Obetz in the operation were J. B. Hodge, resident physician of the hos- pital; George Duggan, and J. B. Ken- nedy. Many other physicians .witness- ed the operation. The Man On Watch. The Lampman does not go to charth with regularity, but when he does go he wants to hear a simple gospel sermon-- omething that brings peace to one's troubled mind after six days of business cares. His conscience is not troubled, 1e says, like some of his neighbors, who lo not give sixteen ounces to the pound, but the stress of business weighs on his mind. Therefore, when he goes to church and is forced to listen to scientific and philosophic sermons, he comes away from church without hav ng his cares removed, "If the preachers would only give us 1 little of the old-fashioned damnation und héll-fire preach ing it would be well for us," he says "Its the old kind of pulpit te: ching we need in these) days and thé ¢lergyihen" Should have!" the witkeitije! of this generdtion, 1 likes man of the stamp of the date Br: Grant, when some of b's Halifax congregation protested againsgt some of his:mtterafices he got up in his pulpit one Sulla thorn- ingiand tolé shem what if ghey digdnlt "vant bhis sgbyices, die wotild ber quite content: tokeave thie andogoiback to ais (former cotindfy , charge,' dnd: there vas! never al murmiic from: them 'afrér- wards)? lo wanld likettor see the rolesgy- nen of this city haveicounage like! that, if they bad, "Wwe mightcbe =m better: "people, of yout moe.in a while? ors 78 " 1196 Jou ass Lautier dives] 'the Lamp man, believes that thedliberal phrty will remain gi power - at. Mr Metcalfe, he remembers, said that night better allow Mt. Fate of Schoolmaster Who Dis- appeated Thirteen Years Ago Told By His Bones. Paris, Aug. 20.--Thirteen years ago a young schoolmaster named Narcisse d"Hardiville mysteriously disappeared from Parfs, and nothing hus ever been learned of his fate. Yesterday, while some wo kmen wer engaged in excavations neir retold about fifty miles' fom' pat thew.un.} carthed a skeleton, »whithuas 'believed NET off "ib to be that of the. missing school The body had been owl nude, depth of three feet. All the circumstanges pee £ o the unfortunate schoolmaster been waylaid and murdered" _ ne body interred cat the 'dpot where the skeleton was found? The measurements taken correspond to the height of the missing man, and a doctor who treated d'Hardiville when young for a fracture of the right arm has found traces of a corresponding in- jury on the agm of the skeleton. There is no known reason why he should have vanished of his own ac- cord. He was engaged to be married, the banus had already been published and he had an excellent situation. On the aftérnoon of the day he de- parted a man, dressed in the Sunday clothes of a peasant, called to sec the school teacher in his abode in Paris. He did not prove a very welcome vis- itor," for shortly afterwards the con- cierge heard the pair engaged in a vio- lent discussion, The unkagwn visitor, with his had pulled down aver his eyes as if to avoid recognition, took his de- parture shortly afterward. Following the ordinary road, he would have to pass within a few hundred yards of the spot where the skeleton was dug up. The tele- gram was evidently a -trap, and its sender persumably counted upon the schoolmaster arriving late at Breteuil, and, failing a conveyance, walking across the country. The sender of the telegram was never diseoveréd, and no mote can be. assigned, for the murder of d'Hardivifle. 10 boiMatihy Of A' Crew.
