We are printing, to-day, a letter signed "Ex-M.P.,"" under the caption, "Phe Great Graft." We have taken pains to ascertain that it was actual- ly written by the man whose name was attached for purposes of identifi- cation, and are thus in a position to say that it is the deliberate statement ol-an ex-member oi parliament who sat in the last House of Commons. This gives it exceptional importance. it js the revelation of a man in a position to know what he is talking { about. When he says that railway promoters who get cash bonuses and bond guarantees from parliament, eontribute handsomely to the cam- paign funds of hoth parties, he speaks from a knowledge of the "inside." This being so, the letter raises a vital issue. The people certainly do not want their money voted presum- ably to secure railway accommodation for the country, to be divided with the politicians who put the "deal" through parliament. This would be a diversion of their funds to purposes for which they were never intended, and would constitute a tremendous temptation to strongly partizan poli- ticians to rush swollen votes of this character through the house for the sole purpose of getting a handsome "rake-off' for their campaign funds. Should such a conspiracy exist for the looting of the treasury, there would be no limit to its operations, for the opposition is accused of being ernment. Under such g plan, the gov- concerned quite as deeply as the gov. ernment would sapply the money and the opposition would contribute sil- ence, and the people would be doubly robbed for campaign funds which would nentralize each other political- ly, but which would furnish rich spending for "the boys" on hoth sides. Furthermore, they wpuld be very like- ly to be robbed again for railway projects which could never stand sin- cere and vigilant public criticism. | This charge is often made; but it is not so often that it is preferred by' a genuine ex-member of parliament. In view of the source, the people cannot do other than listen and demand a oply. They will look especially to the coming sessjon of p liament for this reply, when the public accounts committee can at least breal§ the pre cedent said to be furnished when our correspondent charges that that osten tatiously vigilant body 'never en- quires into the disposal of these gifts of public cash or eredit."" Our cor- respondent promises further ret tla tions. He cannot make them too soon or too fully. The Great Graft. To the RBditor of the Montreal Star. Sir,--The elections being, over, both parties will cool down in time to nor- mal temperature and we may expect he opposition to be using 'the ordin- ary weapon of an opposition--the pub lic accounts committee in the House sf Commons--for fresh bases for al- legations, suspicions and inuendoes. [ purposely omit the word '"'charge," for the reason that during the past sight sessions, no charge, as such, has been made in parliament. Allegations instead of facts, state- ments instead of proof, suspicions and nnuendoes 'instead of charges, have sated but not convinced the public, «nd a few weeks hence are we to have this same method enforced, and the ountry's 'statesmen' inflicting upon the people, through. the press and otherwise, repetitions of the years ? Elections may not be won by wishes yr even prayers, and the majority of the people know it is a matter sonsiderable cost to may - safely arry say # 1 will point out one and per haps the most important namely, railway cash bonuses and bond guarantees. - The country pays the cash and gets he railway, and the general election und of each political party gets some fands. 'The amounts are not usually small either. When the railway irom source, subsidies vote i yw either side of the house. Ten mil lians in ten minutes is the rule. One arty gets its share for putting i hrough,"' and the other for not op yosing it. For twenty years and more t has been going on, and the system s growing more general and for rreater amounts as the years roll on The public accounts committee never quires into the disposal of these rifts of public cash or credit. It night hurt the "party." I mean both yarties in the House of Commons at Jttawa or in the provincial legisla ures. Is it worth whiie to stir up the patter ? Is it wrong for a beneficiary »f the people's cash to divide with the benefactors ? Is it right for gov- wnments and oppositionists to vote these moneys and take (hefore or af er asking for it) their share of the under 7 1 may more fully discourse the bonus matter later on.--Yours aruly, EX-M.P. Miss Martha Green, of 9 Claremont St., in taking a pan of boiling fat from the oven spilt it over her right hand. "The boiling fat ran into the palm of my hand," she says, "and over all my wild with the pain. The hand became swollen, and large blisters formed all over_the palm and along the fingers. For over a month 1 unable to use the hand at all. tried several kinds of salves and iiniments, but the wound seemed apparently no better. It was altogether too severe for these preparations to heal. : About this time 1 was advised to try. Zam-Buk. 1 stopped using all other preparations and applied it in- stead. The very first application soothed my hand and seemed to draw put the fire and inflammation, and as I kept on using Zam-Buk the blisters gradually dried up and disappeared.
