The closing meeting for 1908, 'of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held Thursday afternoon in the Y.W.C.A, parlor, and was well attended. Mrs. McCallum conducted the opening exercises, and after the singing of the aymn "How Firm a Foundation" and prayer, by Mrs. Richardson, gave a brief exposition of the temperance lesson for fast Sabbath. ® The central thought being [saiab's warning to the Israelites, their not heeding it, and the dire results, She said that there was encouragement. in it. for us as a nation. If we advanced along the lines of the reforms begun in the last century, and being so bravely fought during the part of this already past, we might have great hopes for the future of our country. Real prosperity depiends on 'right living. Fhe minutes were read by the corres- ponding-secretary, in the absence of the recording-seeretary, on account of illness. The pleasing incident in refer- ence to the stand taken by the United States President-elect, Mr. Taft, in re- gard to temperance, was received with evident satisfaction. It gave much pleasure to the union a see by the Kingston papers that the Citizen's League are desirous of con- tinuing 'the work of reduction of li- lenses. Attention was called to a meeting of the alliance held in Montreal. It was said that chocolate drops filled with alcohol to such an extent that the liquor contained in a quarter of a pound would 'make a person unaccustomed to it tipsy, were béing sold by confectioners. A gentleman of the Catholic Total Ab- stinence Union strongly denounced their sale sayihg that the object was to create 1 taste for liquor. It was decided to ake necessary steps and make 'a test case. It was thought that in Kingston, things would be different, but it is found hat such ¢hocolates are sold here, too ind can be bought just as easily as any wher kind of candy. A: number of extracts referring to prohibition were read. Gov. Hoch, Kan- sas says: "The beneficent effect of our wise public policies is attested by the logic of results. One-third . of our counties are without prisoners in their jails or paupers in their poor houses, one-half of our counties contributed no sonvicts to our prison population last year, Our educational institutions were never so flourishing. Our churches never so strong, nor our spiritual out- look more hopeful. The saloon has been ically banished frem our state and aneful influence . almost entirely Aiminated." Reports of convention - were given. Some of the plans of work for the com- ing year are:--I Scientific temperance instruction in schools; 2 law enforce- ment in militarv camps; 3 the doing away of bars at railway stations; 4 con- cerning narcotics; § woman suffrage. Although there are many other import- ant departments of work going on, vet these are the lines to which special attention will be directéd. Application 'To Parliament.
