The following are more opisions of citizens upoh tho Wormwith bonus by- law, All seem to be strongly in favor of the bonus, believing that it would bo injurious to the city to allow the piano works to move from here : Dr. Bogart said: The by-law for the granting of the $10,000 will have my supports The firm is composed of Kingston men, who have worked up their business, and I think it will be a good investment for the city to have the company remain." When David G. Laidlaw was ap- proached in regard to the by-law, he said, hel was strongly in favor of it, and did not sce how any citizew could be against it. "The fact of the board of trade putting tho matter 'before the people should satisfy them," said Mr. Laidlaw, "Most of the enterprises that the board of trade has had to deal with have been in a way speeu- LLLLLL P84 £A 08S Wishing all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. If we "do not retain the works, and fifty or sixty families leave the city, we will be out much simply in taxes, without looking ab the business side of the matter at all." S. Oberndorfler-- 'Yes, I favor it; it is nothing but right and just. Kent Pros., bankers, favor the by- law and will vote for its Ald. L. L. Henderson said: "I am strongly in favor of the by-law for the reason that I believe the Wormwith piano works is one of the best indus- tion I have I think that we would lose- it unless we bonus it. Other places have offered free sites and oth: er inducements which -we have to meet. We cammot afford to lose the employees of the piano factory." B. W. Robertson said it had been a profitable factory for the city for a great many years, that it had sup- ported many homes and that it would seem peculiar if Kingston should re- fuse what other cities had already ol- fered Mr. Wormwith. R. J. Carson considered that an in- dustry beneficial to Kingston should certainly be kept here. The Worm- with piano factory had been the gource of subsistence for over sixty families of the city. He couldn't see what reason the city would" have for refusing "what Brockville, Gananoque, Trenton and other municipalities had already offered Mr. Wormwith for the removal of his factory to their town HARDWARE, Fine Table Cutlery Direct from best English makers. Cornelius Bermingham expressed himseli as decidedly in favor of the by-law. Kingston, he said, could not afford to lose such a valuable indus- try. "Pr. D. E. Mundell declared himself The eompany and supported many families. Kingston, Dee. 31.--(To the Edit on) : It will be remembered that not long ago the Cannda Cabinet com- pour. of Gananoque, went out of usiness. Their' plant is now lying idle. - 14 'consists of seven buildings, one of which is 150 x 50 fect, equipped with modern machinery for wood work, water power, ete., the whole costing the company $40,000. With tho water power goes forty shares oi water power stock, valued at $6,000, from which there is a dividend each year. This plant has been offered to ONY SCHOOL SENT WEEK By Sydenham Street Methodist Church--The Affairs Were Quite Unique--Toasts Were Given. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs- day evenings of this week, teas were he! in connection with § way of an experiment and as a ma ter of i the school room con! . was divided into three sections, sen- ior, intermediate the Wormwith company, of Kingston, for a mere song, as compared with want. the buildings occupied by a per- manent concern. Tho history of Wormwith company in Kingston is satisfactory in this respect, hence the anoque will surely be disappointed again, because the by-law will receive little or no opposition on Monday next.--RATEPAYER. EF All For The By-Law. Kingston, Dec. 31.--(To the Edit or) : As a workingman, please permit ! me to say that I bave not met one property holder yet who is opposed ito tho Wormwith company by-law. Nearly overy man I have spoken: to | stated that any persons who obiects to | pay fifleen cents per year for the es tablishment of a large factory in Kingston falls far short of the stan- | dard of good citizenship. Of course, I allude to those assessed for $1,000, The big fellows, of course, will have to pay more, but their share will not | be any ' heavier in that of the working classes. This by-, law is purely one for citizens of the city to handle. In supporting it they | are supporting themselves. All the money will find its way back to those who do the work, and in addition hundreds of residents will be retained in the tity and houses kept occupied. Not in any time has a by-law. gone before the people of Kingston with such strong claims for support as this one has.--~CARPENTER. CREATED APPLAUSE. A Minister Who Discussed Russia's Foreign Policy. t M. ZWOLSKY. St. Petersburg, Dec: 31.--With the | full assent of the Tsar, M. Izwolsky, tho Russian foreign minister, delivered a long speech in the douma, which | was greeted with great applause. Tho appearance of the minister in the tribune produced a grea! sensa- tion. Complete siléhce reigned in the hall, which was crowded. The diplo- | matic corps was there en masse. | Grand Duke Andrew and many women ! were also present. In his speech M. On the intermediate progrgmme were found toasts to the king, the shut- ins, the lady teachers, the men teach- ers, and the superintenaents, while the senior included toasts to the city government, the Moral Reform League our country, the ladies, education and sports. ese latter were all dealt with by the yo#g men of the school.' The programme in each case was not only highly entertaining, but also had its educative effect upon those who took part in it. One of the ollest members of the school voiced the gen eral opinion when he declared that it was the best thing he had ever at- tended in connection with Sunday school teas. Mackenzie and Mrs. Mac- kenzie left, to-day, for London, where Mr. Mackenzie will take charge of the | Christian Workers' church. At the close of the prayer meeting at Bothel church, last night, the retiring pastor bid farewell to the members of his congregation, He referred at some length to the history of the church in London, to which he had been called, and assured his friends at Bethel, that to him the thought of separation had brought with it real heartfelt sorrow, and that nothing but the conviction that God was calling him io London, | would have influenced him to the call. He would always retain for the people of Bethel the warmest feelings of love accept and esteem. He thanked them for the | kindness .which had been shown him during his' ministry of nearly four years . George Mills, secretary of the church, was asked to iake the chair, and in a few words reviewed the act- jon of the church, in dealing with Mr. Mackenzie's resignation. Mrs. R. Moxley was then called up- on, and addressing Mr. Mackenzie, asked him to accept a gift as a part- ing token, at the same time handing Mr. Mackenzie a well-filled bill book, expressing as sho did so, the gratitude herself and other members of the con gregation felt for the many kind words of cheer and sympathy they had received from him. B. W. Robertson, William Clyde, John Venlo, W: Tre: neer, H. Hogan also spoke in a like manner. In cloring, Mr. Mackenzie thanked all present for their expression of al- fectionate regard. His heart was full of love for everyone, and he felt sure that tho ties which now bound them together would continue to be just as {strong and true in the future. MURRAY-CAMPBELL.. Thieves are still busy in, the city. Even during the holiday season they do not take a rest. Some time dur- ing last night, Booth's coal office, at the foot of West street, was entered, and to-day a revolver and $1.50 in stamps was missing. The thief was evidently in search of money, but he was disappointed,.. as there was no loose change to come his way. . trance was secured by breaking one of the windows. At Booth's office a big box of cart- ridges were also taken. Another case was reported this fore- noon by Charles Tomaras, grocer, York and Barrie street.
