Men Told ay Would Be Jet Leave the Country If They Pleaded Guilty--They Did So, But Got Five Years Instead. Ottawa, Jan. 29.--An echo from the Quebée ter-centenary is an applica- tion! to fhe department of justice for the release of Jacob Cohen and Abra- ham Glyek, both of New York, who were sentenced each to five years in the penitentiary for pocket-picking. The ground for the petition is that many arrests for this crime were made during' the ter-centenary and those arrested, who were Americans, were allowdd to go on condition that they at once left ihe country. When these two men were arrested, accord- ing to the petition, they were inform- ed: that if 'they pliadud guilty they would be tipatod as the others and allowed te fro provided they left the country. In order to avoid the trou- ble of a trial they agreed to plead guitty and were surprised when they vere sentenced to five years. They were aecused of nicking pockets on Dufferin, Terrace, Quebec, during the celebration. They ask to be allowed to go on ticket of leave provided they Agree. to return to the United States at once. The division of the work of the railway commission is only in regard to inspector of -accidents. All the oth- er work will he by the full board together. . A peculiar situation was discovered, to-day, when F. Maclean was fourd not to be on any standing com- mittee of the commons. He had made no application, said the conservative whip, who called him a third party. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, however, placed his name down to serve as usual. The deputation of the Engineers' (lub, from Toronto, cons sting 'of Messrs. A. B. Barry, R. B. Wolsely, R. J. Sing 'and Fielding asked Sir Wilfrid Laurier, to-day, to place a Canadian upon the board for the re- building of the Quebec bridge. Sir Wilfrid asked them to suggest a name. , If that were done he would give the matter consideration, done STOCK QUOTATIONS, Cobalt and Leading Stocks Listed.
