A. giimes over pla in Belle wyille, the 14th Juniors were defeated by Pictou, Sue g to three, ' on Thursday ni seven hundred ple. The iy 'was in fine condition for the game, as it had not neen dkated weather on for some tihie, and _ the was quite cold. The local {team left here at noon and spent the hours before the game around Belle ville. Picton' did not arrive in Belle: ville until six o'clock, The game was fast and hard fought. A fast pace was set at the start and maintained until the finish. Picton are a larger, heavier bunch than the sol- diers, but are not as good hockey players, and they will = have a very ard go to defeat the soldicks in Pic- ton. Had the game been here, Picton would have been trimmed. The ends of (the rink instead of Leing sharp, square, pointed like the local one, are round, and this greatly aids a team that is used to them and greatly hin- ders a team that is not. It took the Kingston bunch all the first half to get on to this point. At that stage of the game the score stood three to nothing for Picton, and in the last half, when 'the 14th came back and play ed Hockey the kids made the" big ellows from Picton look like mile posts. In the first haf many penalties were handed out by the referee. The check- ing was close and hard and the pace trying. Picton forward line weighed from ten to thirty pourds each more than the locals, and the defence weigh heavier than that of the soldiers. fn the second half, Picton was given the sincerest sympathy 'of all present. I'he locals simply skated' rings around town téam, only to have hard luck in their shots. In this half yenaltics were very liberal, both teams suffering heavily. Picton have not lost' a game yet this season and have a very good sev- m. They ave all tried players, who have played together for several years thus knowing each other's play from start to finish. The forwards work fine together, using a nice combination, and check back well. Their forwards sertainly did not having anything on the locals only in weight and the de fancy was not any bétter than the soldiers. For the soldiers Brouse played a fine game at rover. Time after time "Bouncer" would get it handed to him, only to come up again for an- other, Avith the same' smile on his face. He was accountdble for one of the goals. Moran, Grattan and Nich- olson, played well together, and = did fine work. The soldiers' forwards have improved a great deal in the past week or two. They are using a far bet- tér combination, and checking back like Tittle Mago. Phe defence," "Mar- chand, Hyland, Sparks, are three good ones, and put up a strong game. Hyland ie ill played a fine game. All the locals improved twenty per sent. after the half-time rest, and same back to Win. For the winners, Croft in goal, Reid md Ellsworth were the stars. At the start of the game Picton rushed to soldiers' goal, and started v regular bombardment, the rink's sorners putting the locals in hot wa- ter. The soldiers défended their mets well for eight minutes, when Hicks landed. After . this goal the penalties started, Moran, Reid, Hyland and Ellsworth being retired in order. About seventeen minutes later Hicks found the nets again, and ten min- utes after Reid made it three noth- ing. Just after this the half-time whistle blew. The soldiers had put up a good, stifi game, and 'were not dis- couraged at the outlook. They were all given a good tub at half time and 'ame back fresh and stron Shortly after half time Dicton scor- »d again, Hicks doing the trick, then followed another list of penalties. After ten minutes play Grattan scor- xd the first goal for the locals, and the balloon went up, the soldiers landing them while the Picton bunch were held to their awn four points. From the time that Grattan scored the first goal to the end of the game, the locals had the Picton bunch on the run all the while, and it was just hard luck that left the score four to three, as the soldiers deserved three more at least, Ladies With Kingston.
