Simeoe,, Ont., Feb. 24. --The trial of Chief of Police Malone for the at tempted murder of Constable W. Wil kins, came to a sudden end this af ternoon, after the defence stated that they had no evidence to offer and the counsel for the defence and counsel for the crown made their appeals to the jury. The judge addressed the jury for over an 'hour. After being out for two hours they returned with.a verdict of guilty. Chiei Justice Mulock, then sentenced Malone to life imprisonment in the penitentiary. In passing sentence, his lordship commented on the fact that the pri- soner"s 'career .in the army and in the South African. war made his fate "all the greater. He expressed his sorrow for the prisoner's' wife and family, but stated that in cases like this the in- nocent must shffer. The judge granted, the personal ap- plication of the prisoner for a week to arrange with his brother to take care of his wiie and family.
