The Remains Taken to Ottawa For The funeral of the late George « an took place this morning from his late residence, Main street, to St. George's cathedral, and thence to the G. T. R. station, where the re mains were placed aboard the train for Ottawa. It was conducted by R. J. Reid. The casket was wrapped in the Union Jack, which the deceased veteran had defended on various fields of battle when he was a Pritish soldier half a century ago.- Many floral tributes covered the casket, among them being tokens from An- cient St. Johns a lodge, of which deceased was a past master, and the Royal Canadian Horse ar- tillery. The pall-bearers were Wil liam Jackson, George A. Comer, W. Y. Mills, William Bramah, John Ni colle and W. H. Gimblett, all fellow Masons. In the cortege was'a ldr representation of St. John's and oth- er Masonic lodges, and the Royal Ca- nadian Horse artillery and other per" manent military corps. At the cathedral entrance the re- mains were met by Canon Starr and Canon Grout, the former conducting the service. The remains were after- wards removed to the railway sta- tion. GRAND TRUNK READY. Whitten- berger, superintendent of the G.T.R. company, asking the city to appoint a few representatives to confer with the company's engineers who will come here at the end of this week or the beginning of next to go over the ground in the vicinity the (LILR. junction and try and settle on some scheme of . crossing protec tion that will be satisfactory to all concerned. The company = has pre- pared plans for an overhead bridge, which would involve closing two public highways. The civic finance committee and Board of Works, along wath the city engineer and city solicitor, will likely meet the railway company's represen tatives. A date has yet. to be fixed. of DEPOT SCHOOL ENTERED. Smashed Clock and One of The Cupboards. Tor the third time- within a year the school at the outer depot was en- tered by night prowlers. There was nothing of much value taken but the thief before taking his departure smashed one of the cupboards and the clock. An empty whiskey flask and some cigarstubs were strewn about, and it is evident that the person or persons who secured entrance were on aw drank. They got into the school by breaking one of the windows. Must Increase Hospital Grant. The general hospital govemors will request. W. F. NickT, M.P.P., to press upon the Ontario government the ne- cessity of increasing the grants to hospitals. The present grants fon sixty-five hospitals is only $136,800, too small a sam altogether, as it equals only twenty cents a day of the cost, or thirteen per cent of hospi- tal expenditure.
