The avérage member of parliament is not so great a reader as he is a talker. When the question of canals was under consideration, or rather the question of how much money should ne spent upon them this season, some tiscussion occurred as to Sunday traffic. Ordinarily the canals. are clos- ed on Sundays. In emerffencies appeal may be made to the railway and can al department, however, and the can- als are opened to relieve any conges- tion in traffic that may take place. This was the case when the Cornwall break happened last year, and it is the move in case when the grain is on the the fall. Because the canal could be opened occasionally on Sun- day led to the suggestion of some members that it should be open every Sunday during navigation. It was a surprise to some that the fall trade was amply provided for, and this goes to show that there are a good many things the politicians do not read be- side the Bible. s------------ Auditor Clancy needs to have some- thing done to him to bring him to He is acting in an absurd and arbitrary manner. his senses. In vestigation into thé causes for the de- position of the priest develops that he 'owes about $130,000, exclusive of a church debt of $28,000. Some of it went to pay premiums on life and aceident insur: ance, of which he had policies amount- ing to nearly « $70,000. The balance went into visionary financial schemes, Ly which he expected to: realize large profits.
