Expressed By Capt. A. T. Hunter, | of Toronto. Toronto Star When we hear that $100,000 is go- ing to be spent on servants' quar- ters in Kingston Military College we turn to the permanent corps and look wer two very smart bodies of men-- he engineers, supposed to be compos «dl of artisans, and the Army Service 'orps, also reeruited as far as pos- sible from artisans--and with Portland cement as cheap as it is, and all these wdll-drilled artisans, cating up our ourskes of instruction and our camps oH instruction--we wonder if these fel lows cannot build a servants' quarters in time of peace, how the devil dolild they build a fortress in time of war. Now, as 1t is bad criticism in mili tary matters nov to suggest a definite remedy. 1 shall make a suggestion to our military authorities. The minister f militia must know that the military «ducation: of the non-permanent offi- wrs of the militia is a ludicrous bur that all the training they ows government is what would he a fairly sergeant. It is true that sporadic at- tempts have been made by well-mean- ng permanent officers, as when Gen itter started the Tactiqal Society, which has died a natural death under his successor. But in general all we nonrpermanent officers sce of the per- manent is when they come to distarl, the mothe in our armouries, or we go to disturb the spiders in Simcoe street looking for our long-overdue checks. That college at Kingston is no doubt as strictly run as a monastery, and i= quite as useful to the Canadian militia. It qualifies, I believe, four officers per annum for 'the imperial service. But among the large officers that every year require to be jualified to fill vacaneics in the eity, and rural corps the results of King | ston Military College are less homeopathic, Now, my suggestion is one that in five years would produce a stream of esque, to the good body of than | SUFFERING FROM ae Her Majesty's Ribs Was Brok- take you out {and show you really qualified officers in Canada. Thu once upon a time I accepted as an in- | witable "Mineralogy | wd Geology," and took, a feigned ine terest in. "'Chapman's Seale of Hard ness.' Could I have been allowed ao in military history or strategy, should have jumped at the chance. And there are 4,000 sia dents at Toronto alone who might do likowise. Now, the universitice would | gladly establish © such courses if the | militia depaciment would pay for | them, because it would mean that in | fifteen years the active militia would be behind the universities. My isuggestion; 'thiut, to the minister of militia, is that instead of spending that $100,000 oun buildings at King ston, he take a hammer and break up Kingston College and attach the pro fessors thereof to the various universi ties of Canada. evil a course on ourse or tactics, 1 Roller Skating Next. | Before long the ! od and the roller stalled again. ice rink will be vios floor will be it Roller' skating is very popular amusement and a Tice number are eagerly awaiting the rink opening. No club without a few good substitutes could stand such a pace successfully. Last vear Stratford lost their chance of winning by 'the cover-point getting his shoulder dislocated, and this year fate arranged the same dose for our boys. It is too bad that the finals could not be arranged for a little earlier in the season, as in case of a tie, as happen- ed this year with T/A.
