McCann Fire, policies {MORE ARE TO RESIGN FROM THE FIRE BRIGADE NEXT WEEK a Merchant Makes a Plea For Better Treatment of the Fire meh--They Get Poor Pay and Too Much Abuse. Kingston, April 3.--(To the Editor): A great deal of talk is heard regard- ing the reorganization and work of the fire department. There are many views held as to how jthe efficiency : of the - brigade may be improved. One suggests a new chief from outside the city. Another suggests the changing of positions held by the present chiel and assistant, while others ask that all the men tender their resignation. As for the latter view, it bids fair to take effect without any action on the part of the committee. First comes the resignation of the engineer, then Fireman McKee, and next week three more of the members will tender their resignation, having better positions awaiting them. The men are to be commended for the prompt action in endeavoring to bet ter their condition, as cert inly the knocks that have recently been hand- ed out to the brigade have not been of a mild type. It's like a winning team---lots of rooters while the games are won, but if a Joss comes, my how the scene changes ! Our brigade was 0.K. so long as the ratio of ~ hres was small and our in- surance rates low (and they haven't advanced lately), but when we get hit once or twice, then therc is an awful howl. Such words "no good," "rotten," 'poor chief," 'men afraid to fight the fire," etc., ete., are heard, as THE PRIZES AWARDED In the Amateur Contest at the 'Grand Last Night. 'Fie Transatlantic Amusement com- pany closed a suecessful ten days' en- gagement at the Grand Opera House, last: evening. The company was greet- ed by ome of the largest audiences present at the Grand. After the con- clusion of the lengthy programme pre- sented, the amateur contest took! place. The number entries was large and consisted of usicians, acro: bats, wire walkers, singers and danc- ers. The different contestants entered into the spirit of the contest and did their best to come out at the top. It was difficult for the audiénce to judge the merits of the different parties, as they all did well. The following were awarded the prizes : Anderson Bros., acrobats, first prize; Little Miss Banks, singer, second prize; Iver Wallace, LT ------ i THE BOARD OF HEALTH WAS LIBERAL But it 'Got 'the Money Back~--The Health Officer Advises That Closets in the Business Section Be Closed. The new Board of Health had its first meeting 'on Friday afternoon, at 1.30 o'clock, when Mayor Couper, J. D. Thompson, James B. McLeod, S. R. Bailey and A. Strachan answered the roll call. Medici! Health Officer Bell and Sanitary Inspector Gordon were also present, Mayor Couper moved that J. Db. Thompson be chairman of the hoard, but the latter declined to accept. He singer, third prize. The contest was enjoyed and the "hook" was seldom employed. They start in at $1.25 a day, and af. ter serving faithfully for one year, and recommendation of the chief, are to $1.30 a day. After two advance to $1.374; more to $1.45, apd after vear more, to $1.50 a day. Here they finish. Think of it, after years' service they get $1.50 a day, or 810.50 a for seven days' work, 168 hours, about seven cents an hour Remember, a fireman is prac- tically always on duty. What mechan- ic in the city, after serving his time (six vears) would like to work for £10.50'a week ! Yes, | may ask, what laboring nan wants to work seven davs in the week for $10.50 ? Very, very few. When you the small wages jpaid the men, is it ito be wondered at that five of them are get- ting away from such wonditions ? What home life has the fireman? Whai time with his family ? What op- portugity to assist in training his children ? How about groceries, meats, clothing, fuel, furniture, foolwear, coltons, woollens, ate. ? All have advanced. Ti fact' the only necessary article thal has not advanced in price is your valuable paper. Now, Mr. Editor, I think you will agree with me that the fire laddies de- «rve better at our hands. Let the committee make the minimum wage 81.50 and the maximum $2. Have the new men carefully selected, physeially fit, strictly temperate and let them be drilled once each week, and if they do this 1 feel sure that Kingstonians will have every reason to be proud gf their fire brigade. ~MERCHANT. ---------- In New" York Marathon.
