KINS IN AN ACCIDENT. -------- Knocked Cataraqui Swing Bridge Off Its Pivot When Comins Through--Considerable Damage Was Done. While being towed through the Cataraqui swing bridge, about - 8.30 o'clock, Saturday morming, by the tug Frontenac, the schooner Bertha Kalkins, owned by Capt. Simmons, ran against the bridge, knocked It off its pivot, and) considerable damage was done both to the bridge and the. vessel, and traffic was tied up. The jib boom and bows- prit of the vessel were smashed, and he- sides, several planks knocked off. The damage to the bridge is far more seri- ous than that to the vessel, and some time will be taken to make repairs. This being market day, it tied up traffic to a great extent. A float was put into service for foot passengers, but no rigs could be carried across. It could not be ascertained who was responsible for the accident, but it was stated that the vessel took a sudden | swerve, and smashed against the bridge, before anything could be done to pre- vent the accident. The schooner Ber- tha Kalkins was sailed last year by Capt. Mack Shaw. A marine man, in speaking to the Whig, stated that it was very difficult for a vessel to get a straight course through the bridge, owing to the fact that there were so many barges laid up close by. He pointed out that on this account, it had always heen a very hard task to get through. The schooner Ford River passed through the bridge yesterday, in prepar ation for her first trip of the season, and the Bertha Kalkins was also about to make her first trip across the lake, and it was indeed rather unfortunate that the vessel should meet with such a mishap.
