Hitherto the most generally adopted means. of disposing of 'the mixed as- sortment of cinders, broken glass, empty cans, paper, rags, and decompos- ing organic matter-has been by crema- tion in a dust-destructor, and the sub- sequent utilization of the vitreous clink- er thus produced for the manufacture of "concrete pavingeslabs, blocks - for house-building, &. An ingenious ma- chine, however, has been devised, and is now being experimented with by a Londen borough council; whereby the garbage can be turned to more profit- able 'account, and yet in a perfectly hygienic manner. This apparatus com- bines the three operations of disinte- grating, pulverizing, and mixing in one "YUhe assorted garbage Bs discharged into_a hopper, through which it falls into a small comparinient in which re- volve four fifty-pound hammers at a speed of one thousand two hundred and fifty revolutions per minute. This is equivalent to five thousand strokes for a cumulative weight of over two hundred and fifty thousand: pounds per minute, itrespectiva, of the impetus produced by the centrifugal force of the machine; and under this treatment the incongruous mass of' rubbish and filth is turned out-of the machine in- one operation in the shape of a uniform black mould. Tins, bottles, ashes, slates, vegetable refuse, and other gar- bage are completely reduced to powder in the apparatus, and so assimilated and intermixed as to constitute a new substance of great value. The 'rubbish requires no preliminary picking over before heing dumped into the machine, since there is an automatic = device whereby those articles which 'cannot be pulverized, such as pieces of steel or wrolght-iron, are thrown out with- out the machine stopping: The plant occupies hut 'little space and can deal with some five tons of rubbish per hour. The operation is effected at a low cost, and 4s perfectly 'hygienic, . there being no dust, smoke, or noisome effluvia, while the resultant manure is entirely odorless. - This latter point-is a'dis- tinct advantage when! the substance is distributed over the land, The rich value of the fertilizer has been quickly realized, and the demand at present easily exceeds the supply from the des- tructor works of the above municipal authbrity where it 'is in operation, and the results: show that. the process. tan be carried out upon lines showing. a substantial profit on each ton produced. Toronto Globe. } As the result of the conference held yesterday between the municipal au- thorities. of Trenton and the Togpnto Electric Light company an arrange- ment, 14s practically been complete by which: that town, will have deve! the water. powers existing on dam: No, 2 of the Trent Valley canal. Mayor Funnell was very optimistic as to the venture when interviewed at the Iroquois Motel. He said the proposi- tione-Jaidy by the Trenton municipal coutttil 'before the officials. of the local company, which already has extensive interests both in Trenton and Belle- ville, had been very fayorably received. The whole matter is. to go before the minister of railways and. canals at Ot- tawa in the near future, and he is hope- ful that the entire scheme can bie satis- factorily arranged. At the, present time the government is building this dam at. d cost of $100,- 000, The Trenton officials are desir- ous of having the power plant con- structed now, because it could be done simultaneously with the dam at much less cost than if it were done later on. The chief magistrate estimates that the power plant will mean an expenditure of $150,000, . Of the four thousand horse power to be developed, the tQwn, under the agreement, will get a block of 2,000, and the remainder will be sold to the neighboring districts. He admits that the town can hardly use the wholé block at the present time, but an extensive advertising campaign will be conducted through the United States in the hope that manufacturers can be induced to come there and: establish factories. 'The power agréed upon will only cost Trenton $16 per horse power. What the developing' campany sell: outside out of the block they have obtained, will return: them a royalty of a dollar a horse power, and the Dom- inion government will also reap a royalty from the proposition. Lady Aberdeen, who has 'added an- o'her to her many good works and deeds by founding a new monthly jour- nal to help in the campaign against consumption in Ireland, figured in a dramatic incident thinty-two years ago. Four slave boys who were offered for sale extited Lady Aberdeen's compassion, and the slave- dealer was invited to bring them on hoard Lord Aberdeen's dahabeeyah, where hie hoped to find a purchaser. When the man stepped on deck with his human chattels, Lord Aberdeen pointed to the British flag and said: "hese boys are free! I claim them mn the name of the queen!" After- wards, however, he compensated the slave-dealer, and Lady Aberdeen re- turned to Ehgland with these four boys and another whom she had rescued, | Three of her adopted children died, | but two were educated and set to use- ful work. : NEVER RECOVERED: Another Victim of Tragedy of Loss of Steamer.
