She the accus ed liberated, stating was not right that he should locked up when he had committed no crime. To lay the blame on the lack of hotel accommo- dition here, as indicated in your is- [sue of Saturday last, is ridiculous. [ningston, in this respect, is far of * Belleville, which boasts ome up-to date hotel, and is also ahead of Brockville, which secured the meeting three years ago. 1 0! One important thing which appears to be overlooked is that we furnish {accommodation for over 2,000" stu- dents attending the university, dif- ferent colleges and Collegiate Institute 1 of which would be available for delegates and in addition, for a meeting of this character, many of the best homes in our city would be thrown open and a hearty welcome extendéd. It is safe to say that Kingston eould comfortably and sa- tisfactorily take care of from three to four thousand delegates and friends in its hotels and private homes. The fact of the matter is that King- ston has had so. few conventions that we do not realize their importance. One such as that just lost to the sity means fer 1,200 delegates. and friends for a stay of four or five days a loss of at least 310.000. A very large number of delegates are accompanied by their wives and fam- ilies who, .dweing the convention meet- ings are visiting the stores and mak- ing purchases. Kingston is in way better suited for a convention city than anv every having a first-class. street railway service, . magnificent parks, places of historic interest and the Thousand Islands at our doors. Permit me to ask if this continual harping that Kingston wants a. new hotel vs doing. the city any good? Will it bring any visitors here ? Will it build a new hotel ? The progress- ive cities are those that are advertis- ing what they have got and .not what they haven't got. The failtre to secure tions rests entirely on the board trade, who, 1 understand, have committee appointed for this pose. You«cannot get i nothing, neither can these conventions | be secured without the expenditure of a little money. The lodges or socie- ties cannot be expected to pay this from their own treasury; their ex- |pevses are numerous and heavy when {a convention is held. in their city. | Let the board of trade get in touch {with every lodge and society in the {city and find out when and where {thir next convention is to be held "and have badges. or pennants and Jouklets advertising the city pre- | pared snd arrangements made that one will be handed to every delegate attending the conven'son hoostine [ Kingston for the next meeting.
