Dastard Trick to Sell Worthless Book. Munich, Aug. "7A remarkable trial hegan here vesterday, in which a pubs lisher named Peter Ganter is accused of a colossal swindle. He got hold of an insignific ant novel called "Double Moral," a work without much point or plot, and determined to obtain for it an unparalleled circulation: He wrote a letter in which the pers sons to whom it was sent were warned that unless they took steps to quash certain proceedings, at which Ganter darkly hinted, they were liable to be involved in a scandal of a grave char- acter. This scandal had already in- volved certain people who were alleged to be friends of each addressee, Ganter advised each person to ob tain this book and to see all that it contained. Nearly hali a million of these letters were sent to respectable people in Ber- iin, Munich, Dresden, Dusseldorf and other large German cities, with the re- sult that tens of thousands of men were in the deepest anxiety. It is stated that the wives of persons who had received this letter had fainting fits, being in dread of impending re- velations, and woman is said to have died in consequence. Fach letter was written with great skill, and was signed with an illegible name. The fraud was quickly exposed, and Ganter's arrest followed immediately, An edition of a quarter of a million copies of the book had been prepared, but the arrest took place so Terk that the sale never grew large. Only a few copies were sold, one FHISISISISISIIGIICIIISICRISKNS CZAR'S GIFTS. London, Aug. .--The Czar has appointed the Prince. of Wales an honor- ary admiral in the Russian navy.
