One .%lause of the Lloyd-George budget bill before the parlisment of Great Britain provided that there should be no appeal from the valua- tion for taxation of property made by the government officials. PECK'S AFFLICTION. Bitten By Viper ; Death May En- sue. London, Aug. 25.--Dr. Herbert Peck, medical officer of health for Chester- field, is lying in a critical condition at Ramsley Lodge, near Baslow, ow- ing to a remarkable adventure with a viper. The medical officer paid a profes sional visit to Ramsley reservoirs on Thursday, taking his two children with him for the drive. 'During the afternioen, being an ardent botanist, he was explaining some specimens he had found to fhe children, when he saw what He believed to be a common grass snake moving in some bushes, Just as he was about to pick it up to show to the children' he was alarm- ed to notice that it was an English viper. The reptile fastened itself to the doctor's wrist, and before he could beat it off it bit him three times. The venom was injected into both hands, and Dr. Peck at once sucked the wounds and applied a ligature. He proceeded as quickly as he could to Ramsley Lodge, where another doc- tor was hastily summoned. Dr. Peck by this time was in a state of collapse. Various remedies were applied, but, his life being considered in danger, relatives and friends were summoned from Chesterfield. SAVED BY PLAYMATE'S PLUC Little By Gas Stove. London, Ont., Aug. 256.--While pass- ing a gas stove the light clothing of Lila Mitchell, little daughter of Capt. The latter seized a sheet, and wrapped it about her, smothering the flames, Reforms Are Following. Montreal Gazette. The whole was seemingly weak, compared with documents in denunciation of abuses the United States public had become used to, that many laughed at it. Since it was issued, however, the stock exchange has ceased dealing in | unlisted securitics. The Metal Ex change, which was somewhat soverely handled, altered its way of making quotations. MONTREAL PRODUCE MARKET Paid For Various Pro- ducts. Montreal, Aug. 24.--The market for cheese closed very strong last week with prices advanced as a result of the keen competition: for the fizst of the August made cheese offered in the country. Higher prices were generally expected last week, but it was hoped that they would not be rushed wp too fast, and interfere with the demand from Great Britain. That is exactly what occurred, and as a resilt the or- ders from tho other side have stopped, and the opcuing markets this woek are back to's lower level, with , every prospect before the ond of the week unless British trade comes on again. The shipments during the past were not very heavy, amounting to only 69,582 boxes, and theve if no doubt that a large proportion of the cheese bought 'last week have been put away in cold storage for futuro re quirements.
