Appointed Gifford Lecturer By University of Glasgow For 1910-1T--He Stands As One of the World's Greatest Philoso- yhhers. | Toronto Globe. Although the appointment has been {made for some months, it may not be generally known that an honor of the very highest rank in the academic iworld has been paid to Prof. John | Watson, vice-principal of Queen's Uni- jversity, in his having been appointed |Gifford lecturer by the university _ of {Glasgow for 1910-1511. In 1387, by the princely bequest of £50,000 by Lord Gifford, {our JecTureships were established in the four Scottish uni- versities, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aber- deen and St. Andrew's "for promo- ting teaching and diffusing the study of natural theology.' Scholars in the foremost ranks in philosophy aml theology have successively held these honored lectureships. The appoint- ment is a mark of the highest distine- tion im the scholastic world. Among the Gifford lecturers of Glasgow Uni- versity have been Prof. Max Muller, Principal Caird, Edward Caird, and last year A. C. Bradley. Only on two occasions has the honor been be- stowed on scholars on this side of the Atlantic, and never before in Canada. Of course, Profi. Watson has long lioyed a world-wide reputation as a | writer and teacher of philosophical subjects. In Canada there have been | two names in the very first rank in the department of philosophy--George {Paxton Young and John Watson. Such books as his 'Christianity And Ideal- nm" and the more recent '"'Philoso 1phical Basis of Religion," have proven | Prot. Watson eminently well qualified |to be made Gifford lecturer, the {subject of '"'Nataral Theology." Tt | privately announced that Prof. Wat- {son's subject will be "The Development {of Christian ' The first ries of lectures, to be delivered in | October, 1910, deal with the his- [torical development of the Hebrew and {Greek religions, and their culmination fin ( hristianity, while the second series {will present a reconstruction of Chris | tian theology. Provision is, of {course, made for the publication i {these lectures, so that Dr. Watson's | 2 . many friends and admirers look {forward to a new volume this I most interesting subject. The cowig of the Gifford lectureship to Canada is a matter of national congratulation and Queen's is particularly proud that her long-revered professor of moral philosophy has been the first Cana dian recipient of this high honor. en- on Theology sS6- will me .
