No. There was a vast differonce between protect ing the ground landlord and protect ing the village school. "The lords did not choose bills or merit. If they wanted to reject--or refer to the people'--they had another method. If a bill had powerful friends, they could avenge its assassin- ation. It passed through on that per- ilous journey without a toll. It has slaughtered without compassion tem- perance bills. There are rich brewers in the House of Lords and their share- holders, and these bills had got to be slaughtered. "At last, with all their cunning, their greed has overborne their craft. "| don't like to play cards fox money, but I don't in the least mind playing for a prize," is the attitude of several New York women who have recently got up 'a club. Who was to furnish the prizes was another ques tion. They didn't wish to have the woman at whose home they bap) :ned to be playing buy prizes in addition to a little luncheon. Finally one the members suggested a plan whi'h has met the approval of all the wo- men concerned, and it has been adopt- ed in the club. At the beginning of the game each player puts up a quar- ter, so 'that there is a 'prize of a dollar at each table for the winner. That is perfectly logical and the eter- nal feminine «ay of getting out of a dilienlty. They don't have to play for money, wherever they may be. And the prizes happen to be money. No matter.
