CAUSED DOWNFALL 'OUTBIDDING MANY: PREAC HER SAID MARRY HER, THE HE'D Grand Rapids Girl Told Friends She Was to be Bride of Rev. B. EK, Parkinson, Ejected by Methodists, Grand Rapids, Mich., Feb, 19.--In- tquiry among the fr ends and relatives ! fof Miss Etta Trendt, whose testimony caused the downfall of Rev. Benjamin E. Parkinson: from his seat in the Methodist conference at Muscatine, Howa, disclosed some interesting facts bearing on the nearaomance of Miss | Trendt with the former Grafd Rapids preacher. Miss Trendt was doubly de {ceived by him, as she Knew him as {Conrad Reardon, and he told her that he was unmairied, while he had a wife in Towa. According to the stories told by the girl's friends, Parkinson had promised to take her west and marry her. The girl's brother, J. Lewis Trendt, of this city, said she had spoken of going out west, and it was generally understood that she was to become a bride, al- | though her friends did not know who 'her Hane Was. Diligent inquiry concerning Benjamin E. Parkinson disclosed sev- eral facts of interest in view of the pa- ture of the case which resulted in hig {expulsion from the church at Nicholas. He lived with his wile here for several months last year, lemving in October at which time he removed to the Towa jtown. He is described as a tall, slim 'man, with dark hair and moustache; 'and is said not to have exhibited any particular degree of taste in his dress. Mre. A. H. Shank, who ig in charge of the house where he boarded, Mon- day night declared that Parkinson had accumulated numerous obligations while he resided there, and that sev. eral collectors and merchants had lealled since his departure, in the effort "Rev, to collect the amounts alleged to: be due them. 3 Mrs. Shank said : "He once told me ithat in case any one sought to leave a message for 'Reardon,' that I wus {to receive it and give it to him. Mis {wife told me that they had once had some domestic difficulty because of his attentions * to a young woman, . but while thoy were here "he seemed quite attentive to her. It was evident to me that he thought himself fully capa re- ble of getting his living with his tongue, as he certainly was a smart talker." Mre. Frederick J. Blymeir, of XW North Jefferson street, is a Cousin of y | Parkinson, but "denied that she had ® heard from him since he moved away. London, Feb. 19-The question of the shortage of ' horses in England, | and the serious problem with which ithe army remount department would {be confronted as a Consequence in the devout of war, has during the last few days been given special prominence. Expert evidence has been published showing that there is no room for doubt that the shortage exists, and also that two great sources of supply --the omnibus horse and the cab horse ~are no longer to be relied on. At the same time it has been shown that the agents of various foreign war de partments are outbidding us all over the country for best stock. Inquiries in Ireland show that a sim ilar shortage is threatened there. Thousands of horses raised in the country are bought up by foreigners, in most cases government agents. The principal buyers are Germany, Belgi am, Austria and Italy, but France, Holland and Switzerland also look to Ireland for some of their best army horses, "There is no doubt that both at the Dublin horse show and at the numer ous horse fairs and sales up and down the country a very large number of the best animals go to foreigners, said the manager of Messrs, the famous Irish repository. "Not only agents but number of German and come over here to buy Une German officer to my knowledge, has given as 'much as 150 guineas lor =a horse. The average price paid by the foreigner for a good animal is nearer ($250 than $200, and frequently as | mu h as $300 and $400 is given. The {Germans think a great de al of the horses from Ireland, and buyers ire continually coming back to get more. | Sewell's a large officers also other horses. mam---------- News From Picton.
