REGARDING WAGES. - Will Pxpend $30,000 For The First Three Years, and Thereafter $40, 000 a Year--Meeting of City Coun- cil to Amend the By-law. The Kingston Shipbuilding company, instead oi agrecing to pay the sum of $20000 a year in wages to residents of Kingston in consideration of being granted exemption from taxation, has decided to make a still more generous offer to the city council. At the spe- cial meeting of the council, held lust Thursday, one of the aldérmen thought that the amount'guaranteed in wages should be increased. The by-law was given a second reading, but since that time it has been held up hy the company solicitor, J. L. Whiting, K.C., who desired to know if the com- pany intended to pay the $20,000 in wages to residents of Kingston only. The members of the company have replied that they certainly intended thix. They have now given their soli- citor "instructions to have the by-law amended by increasing materially the amount of wages to be paid each year. This morning Mr. Whiting made this statement : "As some of the aldermen have ex- pressed a wish that the company should, if possible, guarantee a larges annual expenditure for wages than amd so make/the proposition the directors of the company, after consideration, have agreed to make the figure $30,000 for the first three years and $40,000 there- after. The by-law will, therefore, be amended by this change of figures be- fore going to the people.' Mayor Couper has called a - special meeting for Tuesday evening Lo revise the by-law and fix a later date than March 15th for its submission to the people. The by-law has to be adver tised in the papers for three weeks be fore it can be voted upon. CITY AND VICINITY. Received a Promotion, Lieut. Toronto Globe : There has not been a better or more Mutual street rink this season that 4n-whieh the University of 'onto and Queen's University es iaturday night, in the Intercollegiate enior series. The contest drew per- wpd the largest crowd of the season, he fucts that Queen's had beaten Mec- ill in Montreal and that a 'victory 'or Varsity made the championship sertain, accountihg to a large extent or the big turn-out. Queen's won the rame in overtime, by 14 to 13. The core at half time was 5 to 8, at the onclusion of the hour of play, 12 to 12, at the end of the first period of yvertime, 13 to 12 in favor of the Uni- versity of Toronto, and the final, 14 o 13 in favor of the Presbyterians 'rom Kingston. Queen's could not have been better eased had the ice been made to their srder. They are essentially a fast ice eam. McGill beat Queen's on slow ce at Kingston, but the Kingstonians cnt back to Montreal for the return ame and beat McGill 6 to 4 on hard ve. The winners were superior to Var ity in both speed and stick handling, Jdthoiugh the Toronto students clearly witshot the visitors. Queen's defence ~as weak, else the visitors would have von the game handily without the ne- wessity of playing overtime. The Pres wterian forward line is quite the hest een here this season, not excepting Montreal Vietorias or Cliffsides, of Ot- awa. Campbell, Crawford and Dob- on skated their checks to a stand till, but both teams were quite wil ing to leave the jce when ap issue had sen obtained. Dobson was the star f the game. He was used ut right ing, and 'MeSloy stuck to him hroughout the first half and well into he second period. After that, how- ever, Dobson ran wild and did a lot of .elling work for his team, although the moe told even on him before the game vas over. With Code and Gallie play- ng for Queen's instead of for Varsity he latter would |have been beaten ithout extra time. Tremble and B. seorge were weak on the defensive for he winners, but their offensive play vas no small factor in the Queens sdetory. Both goal tenders played in- onsistent games, now stopping seem ngly impossible shots and again al owing casy ones to find the pet. The siting defence was easily drawn out nd Varsity's good shooting forwards ook advantage of the fact.
