Vaneouver, April 14.--In Rohert Bar's novel, "The Measure of *'the Rule," published a fow years ago, the redoubtable politician, Joe Martin, formerly of Winhipeg and Vancouver, now of London, figures under the name of Joun Henceforth. Robert Barr was a student #t the Toronto Normal School over thirty years ago, and this novel, "The Measure of the Rule," is largely autobiographical dealing with his life and adventures while attending this - institution. The characters in. the Pook are ali drawn from life; they in- chide the teaching staff and some of the students, In many of samen the Bemes are bat slight shatged; EB. A. Blakely fortmer| ortmerly of Eo appears in the bpok under his own name. Among the characters "are J. L, Hughes as John Brent, and Joe Mar- tin as John Henceforth. Martin began life as a school teacher, and was a fellow student with Barr at the norm al school. What Barr has to say about Martin is very interesting. Chapter XIV is tly given up to him. "John Rencelorth," writes Mr. Bare "a a difficalt man to estimate accur- ately, His face, nose and eyes had something hawk-like about them, but his manners were those of the gentle dove.
